If you like your Victorian mysteries with a healthy dose of magic and monsters, you’ll love this new series from the author of The Daemoniac and the bestselling Fourth Element trilogy!Winter 1888. At an asylum in the English countryside, a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper kills an orderly and flees into the rain-soaked night. His distraught keepers summon the Lady Vivienne Cumberland—who’s … Vivienne Cumberland—who’s interviewed their patient and isn’t sure he’s a man at all. An enigmatic woman who guards her own secrets closely, Lady Vivienne knows a creature from the shadowlands when she sees one. And he’s the most dangerous she’s ever encountered.
As Jack rampages through London, this time targeting rare book collectors, Lady Vivienne begins to suspect what he’s looking for. And if he finds it, the doors to the underworld will be thrown wide open…
Across the Atlantic, an archaeologist is brutally murdered after a Christmas Eve gala at the American Museum of Natural History. Certain peculiar aspects of the crime attract the interest of the Society for Psychical Research and its newest investigator, Harrison Fearing Pell. Is Dr. Julius Sabelline’s death related to his recent dig in Alexandria? Or is the motive something darker?
As Harry uncovers troubling connections to a serial murder case she’d believed was definitively solved, two mysteries converge amid the grit and glamor of Gilded Age New York. Harry and Lady Vivienne must join forces to stop an ancient evil. The key is something called the Thirteenth Gate. But where is it? And more importantly, who will find it first?
Praise for The Thirteenth Gate
“Ms. Ross marries the world of science and paranormal seamlessly, applying well-researched, scientific principles to an intricately detailed investigation where the clues unfold to reveal a wholly plausible, yet deeply sinister case of supernatural phenomena. The mastery of The Thirteenth Gate is that it is a story propelled by the thrill of suspense, yet beautifully centered on emotions that tug at my heart.” –FlyLef Reviews

“I did not put it down until the last page, and even then I wanted more! Now I wonder how long it will take to the next book; I am addicted, what can I say?” –Kinda Busy Reading
“Fast paced, well-written, with characters that you care about… It’s historical, with mysteries, and a tiny hint of romance, but not overwhelming so the main focus is on the plot. Although that little hint leaves you wanting more…” -Reading for the Stars and Moon

Great follow up to the previous book and enjoyed from start to finish.
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I’ve read the first book in the Gaslamp Gothic series, The Daemonic (which was very good), and this one, which is the second in the series, did not disappoint. I thought that this book was also very good, and I’m excited to read the other three books in the series.
I really enjoyed this second in a series. I was skeptical as the book began with new protagonists, but i have come to like them equally well. The plot is gripping, and the choices made are not often (although occasionally) of the “oh come on, don’t do that, no one would do that” variety. Ready for more!
Kat Ross writes historical fiction like a master. It is almost as if she had lived during that time to give such detail on the pages to the places and characters. Plus her work in the mysterious and supernatural realm withe her words are magic in themselves. I truly enjoyed this book and series and I am really looking forward to reading the next in series.
The series has sucked me in.
This book kept me wanting to read. I was very pleased with my choice.
Bought this on whim & enjoyed so much I’ve read the entire series & working on others written by this author. This is an update; I’ve read books from The Fourth Talisman and The Fourth Element series now. Very good subject matter, excellent writing & character development plus I find her style of writing exceptional. I’m fascinated by her characters & the storylines to the point of addiction.
Really enjoy this author.
Great use of fictional historical characters and new characters in an entertaining story.
Great historical mystery!! I felt I went back in time.
Great read. Enough action to keep you entertained. Very imaginative and original.
Here we have Harriet Fearing Pell and her trusty side kick John actually entering the supernatural. In the last story she was confident that such did not exist. Oh my, now she not only knows differently, she must adapt.
I like to refer to these stories as the CSI of the 1800s, lots of evidence gathering and analyses. Suspects are plentiful and they are characters.
Interesting book that is out of the typical paranormal box between characters, timeline and storyline – makes one wonder what will be happening next !
This is the second in a series of mysteries set in the late 1800s with a mystical slant. The main character in the first book was a teenage girl trying to make a name for herself as an investigator. She is in this book but new characters and much more occult aspects are introduced in this book with Egyptian mysteries.
I’m not finished with it yet-85% done it is very good.
Victorian Era with a supernatural twist. What’s not to like?
I enjoyed the novel very much I really like the way the author writes and I bought the next one in the series thank you
The author really can write a good book!
