The official companion to the Emmy-winning Netflix drama chronicling the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and starring Claire Foy and John Lithgow, The Crown by Peter Morgan, featuring additional historical background and beautifully reproduced archival photos and show stills Elizabeth Mountbatten never expected her father to die so suddenly, so young, leaving her with a throne to fill and a global … throne to fill and a global institution to govern. Crowned at twenty-five, she was already a wife and mother as she began her journey towards becoming a queen.
As Britain lifted itself out of the shadow of war, the new monarch faced her own challenges. Her mother doubted her marriage; her uncle-in-exile derided her abilities; her husband resented the sacrifice of his career and family name; and her rebellious sister embarked on a love affair that threatened the centuries-old links between the Church and the Crown. This is the story of how Elizabeth II drew on every ounce of resolve to ensure that the Crown always came out on top.
Written by the show’s historical consultant, royal biographer Robert Lacey, and filled with beautifully reproduced archival photos and show stills, The Crown: The Official Companion: Volume 1 adds expert and in-depth detail to the events of the series, painting an intimate portrait of life inside Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street. Here is Elizabeth II as we’ve never seen her before.

Enjoyable for fans of the Netflix series. I always prefer to know what’s true and what’s invented for creative purposes or time restrictions. I listened to the audiobook so didn’t see the photographs contained in the print/ebook editions. Those might have brought my rating up to a 4 star. Nonetheless, I liked it and can recommend it.
A great companion to the Netflix original series, the book goes episode by episode, explaining the historical context and helping to separate fact from the occasional literary license taken by the show.
After watching the first season of Peter Morgan’s award winning Netflix series, The Crown, I decided to purchase historian Robert Lacey’s companion to the series The Crown: The Official Companion Volume 1 Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, and the Making of a Young Queen 1947-1955.
The Crown The Official Companion Volume 1 Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, and the Making of a Young Queen 1947-1955 covers the royal timeline from November 1947 when Philip and Elizabeth are married in the royal wedding of the century at Westminster Abbey through 1955 as Winston Churchill sings his swansong, Princess Margaret announces duty to the crown before love, and Elizabeth II has her portraits done by both Pietro Annigoni and Cecil Beaton.
What makes The Crown The Official Companion Volume 1 Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, and the Making of a Young Queen 1947-1955 unique is the books design and layout. To begin with, the front and back covers show a profile photo of Claire Foy, who portrays Elizabeth II in The Crown next to a profile photo of Queen Elizabeth II. Inside the cover is the image of a crown being formed as seen in the series opening followed by a photo of Claire Foy as Elizabeth II. The family tree of the House of Windsor features the genealogy of Philip Mountbatten and Queen Elizabeth II. Next is an index with a forward by Peter Morgan and chapters which cover each episode of The Crown during this time period. The book contains a plethora of photographic images featuring the cast of The Crown alongside those of their real life counterparts. In each chapter, the author features biographical vignettes to introduce you to the historical figures and the actors who portray them in the Netflix series. In addition, Lacey has featured history lessons and topics which play a part in the life of the monarchy throughout the book. Towards the end, there is a royal timeline, cast and crew of the Netflix series The Crown, recommended reading, acknowledgements, image credits and an index. The Crown The Official Companion Volume 1 Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, and the Making of a Young Queen 1947-1955 is a total of 322 pages,

Some good background on season 1, including what was true and what wasn’t. No inside scoops on the real story that wasn’t allowed to be in the show tho.
Reading this now. It compares The Throne show with info about what was really happening at the time.
This book is filled with historical facts written in an engaging way. It contains great photos and is an interesting read. I really enjoyed this book and learned some things I didn’t know about British History and the inter working of the lives of the people involved
I enjoyed finding out more of how The Crown was made and learning more about
Some of the characters.
There is good background information on the royal family and other pertinent characters as depicted in the first season of The Crown. Interesting to compare the pictures of the actors to the real people. I intended to only skim the pages, but it was sow ell done i ended up actually reading it.
