A clan war stands between them. Can fate bring them together? After each life cycle, Catherine returns to the heavens for a new assignment. This time, she’ll be born in the Highlands of Scotland, and she’s thrilled to learn she’ll meet her soulmate. Circumstances will try to wrest them apart, but they must stand strong if they’re to live a happy life. There’s one drawback: Catherine won’t remember … won’t remember anything once she’s born…
Catherine is married to Henry Merrill, an abusive Englishman who resents her for her failure to bear him sons. Their one daughter means nothing to him, and though the bairn is sickly, he refuses to send for a healer. Desperate, Catherine ventures into the Highlands alone—intent on saving her only daughter—only to find herself in a life-threatening situation mere hours after she leaves the castle.
Revenge consumes Graeme MacGregor’s every thought. Henry Merrill attacked his castle and slayed his parents and brother in front of him, and he’s intent on paying the man back in kind. Finally, after years of training, he and his warriors are ready to mount their attack. But when he rides to Merrill land to conduct a final scouting mission, Graeme instead finds—and rescues—a beautiful lass facing sure death. The brave and feisty beauty reminds him that there’s a life beyond revenge, but everything changes when he finds out she is Merrill’s wife.
First in a new series, this is a stand-alone novel with no cliffhangers

I thoroughly enjoyed this book – it is such a different type of story than what I usually but I couldn’t put it down after I started reading. The book has a short prologue & epilogue that are paranormal but the book itself is completely historical romance, so even if you don’t like paranormal, you will enjoy the book & just skip the prologue & epilogue.
Gabriel & Cara were wonderful main characters with Wyot & Harold adding so much to the book as secondary characters. Keira’s plots are always family oriented with a HEA & this one included loss of love, evil villain, loyal/loving friends, sibling love, new love & some twists & turns. I highly recommend this book that mixes paranormal & historical romance in a unique & romantic story.
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
This was different from all other books. Interesting concept. Happy for Grahme and catherine. It seems abuse is a common occurence no matter what era. Izzy was so cute sounding. The only thing I wish there wound have been more about the births they had. Glad Boyd could come out of his shell. Another great read.
Quite the page turner, couldn’t put it down. I chew up her books as fast as I can get my hands on them. Highly recommend all of them.
Keira Montclair brings us the tale of two soulmates destined to meet in the Highlands of Scotland with Book One, Trusting a Highlander, in her newest series The Soulmate Chronicles.
Catherine and Graeme are introduced to one another in heaven. It is explained to them they are soulmates, and must find one another in each life they are sent too. Circumstances will never be easy, as they will have no memory of meeting in heaven, but they must leave each life leaving those they have touched better for having known them. Their first assignment finds them in the Highlands of Scotland.
Catherine is sold by her father to Henry Merrill. An Englishman exiled to Scotland, Henry is evil and abusive. Catherine is constantly beaten and punished for not providing him with a male heir, and their sickly young daughter has been banished to a dank corner in the basement. Desperate to save her child, Catherine escapes Henry’s castle to find a healer for information on how to aide her daughter.
Graeme MacGregor finds Catherine being attacked by a wild boar while scouting for his mission of revenge against Henry Merrill. Years earlier, Henry viciously attached and murdered Graeme’s parents and older brother. Graeme has spent years training his men so that they can attack Merrill’s castle and seek retribution by murdering both Merrill and his family. Once he has saved Catherine, however, Graeme’s thoughts of revenge are overtaken by his need for the beautiful, kind and brave wife of his most hated enemy.
Will Graeme and Catherine be able to overcome the circumstances and odds against them so they can earn their happy ever after?
Keira Montclair has done a brilliant job of creating vivid characters, each stuck in situations beyond their control that seem to be ruling their destinies leaving them both mired in tragedy. Once these characters collide, things begin changing for both. Catherine begins to learn there is life beyond the cruelty of her father and husband and Graeme begins to discover that there is more to life than revenge. The side characters, such as Graeme’s younger brothers and Catherine’s daughter and trusted servants are also well written and add much to the story.
The plot in Trusting a Highlander is unique. I love the idea of predestined soul mates having to find and fight for one another to achieve their happy ever after. The author also does a fabulous job of creating a vivid setting in the beautiful yet harsh Highlands of Scotland. I have grown attached to Graeme and Catherine and cannot wait to see what Keira Montclair has in store for them when they meet again for their next life cycle.
5 stars!
