#1 New York Times Bestseller • A historian of fascism offers a guide for surviving and resisting America’s turn towards authoritarianism. The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw … wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.
On Tyranny is a call to arms and a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.
“Mr. Snyder is a rising public intellectual unafraid to make bold connections between past and present.” —The New York Times

We can complain all day long about the world we live in but the fact is no time before has so much of humanity live freely. This freedom is the product of things we take for granted but that for centuries were nothing more than a dream: separation of powers, free and universal elections, term limits, etc. Because of this taking for granted we might not realize how fragile it all is and how a seemingly innocent chain of events could take it all away. This book is an urgent and opportune reminder of our duties as citizens to help strengthen these principles. The 2oth century was a tumultuous time that brought dramatic changes both for good and bad. We should learn from them and wok to having those dark times not return.
