Have you ever felt bloodlust so strong, it makes you want to kill?I do. Everyday. But I deny it, because to acknowledge the whispers is to give them power—to make them real—and then we’d really be in trouble. You see, my sisters are the only other Supernaturals I’ve seen in over five years. That’s a long time to be the only thing standing between Alexandra and burning a house down. To stand … between Alexandra and burning a house down. To stand between Lily and her depression. To ignore the killing gene and my demons who cause it.
Lucky for me, everything is about to change.
My name is Selena Foster, and I was just shipped off to a Supernatural boarding school along with my sisters. I should be thrilled we are not alone. I should be grateful to leave the human world. I am not.
Someone has been hunting me, and without the human world to hide us…they’re bound to catch up.
Hell have mercy on their souls when they do, because I won’t.

Oh My God! It is so hard to believe that this is the first book by this author. The characters and world building are out of this world! I can not wait to see what is in store for the rest of the series!
Wow, where do I start? This was obviously the first book in the series, it mostly just dealt with the building of the world and getting to know the characters. I’m not complaining, it was hard to put down. Selena has secrets that are kept from everyone, even the reader. Which of course keeps me glued to the page hoping to find out. There isn’t much action until close to the end but it was one of those “oh crap, it’s over?”. And then there’s the crash when you realize the next book isn’t due until later this year, argh. I emailed the author as soon as I was done asking when the next book came out. Dang book hangover, I want more! I loved the characters, the sisters are loyal and the differences in their personalities was so realistic. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work and chose to write a review.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it overall. It took me a few chapters to get into the book, but the story and concept were very intriguing, despite YA academy not being my favourite genre.
Thrust into an academy for gifted supernaturals after spending years on their own hiding their powers from the humans around them, 15 year old triplet sisters Selena, Lily and Alexandra have a dark secret, one they must keep at all costs. All three are powerful but if knowledge of Selena’s true strength got out, it could put everyone in danger.
Selena was shall I say an interesting character. The book was told from her pov but for most of it, she was actually very hard to like. She’d had it really tough, trying to be the strong one for her sisters, but she had such an attitude that wasn’t very endearing. She came across as a moody, controlling, rude, somewhat selfish brat with a superiority complex, even over her fellow supernaturals and teachers. However as the story developed we came to see a little underneath her armour and how it defended her from people getting too close and finding out what she was. It also helped control her dangerous power. She was fiercely protective of her sisters, even though they all at times rubbed each other up the wrong way, just like the snarky teenagers they were.
The mystery surrounding what exactly her powers were built throughout, I was intrigued as to what they might be, however the reveal was not quite as explosive as I expected. Her powers are very cool but I think/hope we have only scratched the surface and there’s more to come, especially around the killing gene and the way her darkness needed to be sated as this wasn’t explained.
I loved Lucas, I am a sucker for green eyes! He was mysterious, patient, kind and understanding and was the only one who saw the real Selena, so knowing how their slow burn connection grew throughout, her reaction at the end was a surprise, or maybe not. There is a lot more to come there!
I listened to the audio version and the narrator was very good. She captured Selena’s teenage angsty, moody, closed off personality really well.
I’m intrigued as to where this story goes next. I hope Selena softens her attitude a bit and lets us in as I want to like her more . She’s had a lot to deal with and she is still so young at 16 to be so cynical. Looking forward to more!
Story 3.75, narration 4 stars
The FMC is a total BA! Really enjoyed this slower paced supernatural story
I was intrigued from the get-go with book 1 of Kel’s Daizlei Academy series. I have listened to Stacey before on audiobooks so I know I would like her rendition and I was not disappointed. I thought she did a phenomenal job with all the characters and their different personalities. Especially in academy settings, you could get lost with all the various characters but Stacey did a great job making them different so you could know who was who easily. I through the tension she created with Selena and Lucas was fabulous and I could feel it in my bones haha. And the sisters different personalities really shown through. Another great job by Stacey, looking forward to more from her!
For the story, I enjoyed the rollercoaster we got in book 1 and I really liked that it was a slowburn and really focused on the story, the relationship building, and the magic part of the world. I think it will really set the stage for the other books in the series (I will be getting them on audio once they are available, for sure!). I think sometimes I couldn’t connect with parts of the storyline so that is why its a 4-4.5 star listen for me in that regard. I think the reveal of her power didnt jive with me. Like it didnt make 100% sense with her other powers and it came out of left field. I know authors don’t want to give too many things away but I didnt get enough to make the reveal plausible, if that makes sense. Beside that, and sometimes Selena’s anger/quick to jump to conclusions, like I said made me disconnect a bit from her. I overall enjoyed the story though and will definitely be checking the rest out because I am now invested haha. I need to know how things work out with Selena and her love interest, and how the fallout will be with the reveals at the end of the book!! I am also excited to see more powers and world building in book 2 and am already putting it on my list of audiobooks to check for weekly, since everything is so backed up in terms of releases (due to the pandemic).
I would definitely recommend this audiobook for people who love some twists in their stories, some darkness, and some exciting magic/supernatural elements. If you like the world and relationship building aspect of a story more than STEAM ALL THE TIME haha then this book is definitely for you. I am not a huge fan of academy books (I know this one came out before it became a craze) but this one definitely hooked me
Flock review. This book was interesting, it was slow at the beginning but picked up, the characters are interesting, the world-building is intriguing, and definitely an interesting plotline, I would’ve liked more depth and quicker but each author is different. The main character Selena was refreshing, it’s not the typical character, she is complex. The audiobook is narrated by Stacey Glemboski, she does a good job narrating, the voice matches the character and the edition was well done. Recommended more as an audiobook.
I know this is titled and listed as an academy book, however I would put it under supernatural, coming of age, angst that happens to be at an academy.
I was unsure of Selena for about 90% of this book. It was interesting to read a book and not quite connect or trust the main character. I think that was because she was so good at guarding and protecting herself and sisters that it translated into guarding the reader as well.
I liked the build up of the story and did find it was too slow at times, but the overall tidbits of details really made it worth it. I very much enjoyed the ending and hope the pace is kept for book two. There was very little romance in this book but it needed to be that way. There’s plenty of time for that, as much as I love Lucas. 4.25 stars.
Sadly I can’t say this about many books, but this one was undoubtedly completely awesome. The main character is well developed, and its easy to form a real connection to this fictional being and other side characters. Your never overloaded with too much information, while instead get to witness a solid timeline that goes on over many months. I kinda dug Selena’s whole ‘dark’ nature, it was interesting to read about and see how she went about coping with different situations. This was an easy 5-stars. Respect to the author.
I find some YA books can be a bit hit and miss but this one was a definite hit, the 3 sisters all have different powers but I loved how Selena is strong female and is willing to fight her own battles, but also find her a bit frustrating at times which is great as thats what people are like so you can relate more to her. There is great world building within this book and you get to know the characters pretty well and no you don’t have to like them all! The way Selena’s secrets are hinted at through out the book keep you hooked and needing to know more and can not wait to see what happens in the next book.
An electrifying read!
So I read the preface and I’m like wait, I want more and some answers: Who is talking? What’s going to happen?
Absolutely loved the writing as well as the characters. Excellent!
I absolutely loved this world – getting to know and explore it. So good!
A girl fighting her inner monster – her demons – by doing the only thing that can bring her relief for a period of time – unleashing it so the blood lust can be fulfilled.
Suppress the insanity. Feed the demons. Control the killing gene.
Full of supernaturals, family, secrets, danger, betrayal and a hint of romance.
Perfect for readers of paranormal romance/fantasy.
The second time I read this book is with the audio version. Narration: enjoyed every moment of the book because of the narrator. So good!
This is a strong series opener. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are well developed and the story sucks you in.
