The Golden Age of Sail has Returned — in the Year 2352
When his mother dies in a flitter crash, eighteen-year-old Ishmael Horatio Wang must find a job with the planet company or leave the system — and NerisCo isn’t hiring. With credits running low, and prospects limited, he has just one hope… to enlist for two years with a deep space commercial freighter. Ishmael, who only rarely visited the … rarely visited the Neris Orbital, and has never been off-planet alone before, finds himself part of an eclectic crew sailing a deep space leviathan between the stars.
Join the crew of the SC Lois McKendrick, a Manchester built clipper as she sets solar sails in search of profit for her company and a crew each entitled to a share equal to their rating.

A great example of world-building and character development. I thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in Nathan’s version of the future of humanity. If I could, I’d sign on for a stint on a deep space leviathan. The narrator did a fantastic job, and I highly recommend getting the audio version
Down-to-earth coming-of-age story about young trader learning to trade. Wholesome entertainment, deriving its drama from normal, learning to get along type challenges rather than huge epic destinies. If you like slice-of-life, money stories or stories that aren’t drenched in sex and violence, try this series.
OMG, this whole series is phenomenal! Beginning with this book, you follow the life of Ismael Horatio Wang, an 18 year old who suddenly finds himself not only orphaned by a freak accident but is facing deportation from his home as well as not being able to support himself. He makes a choice between being deported somewhere, broke and deeply in …
In my opinion, Quarter Share, by Nathan Lowell is the first of one of the better SciFi series out there. No wars, just good old human nature, and spaceships. The characters are engaging, the series takes you through the life of a new starship crewman all the way to captain. There are actually three series, each building on the previous. Great …
An excellent look at sailing the stars from a different perspective. The main characters are not the typical ‘above average’ individuals found in most stories. They are ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances. I truly enjoyed this book and the entire series.
So much of SF these days is space marines. Now for something completely different. The series starting with this book is about a young orphaned man making his way in a peaceful galaxy. The starships trade between worlds. People better their lot through education, doing their jobs well, and making connections. A truly enjoyable series with heart.
All of his ‘share’ books are great. Start with the first one and you will see what I mean. Nice sci fi story with good positive characters. You can’t go wrong with these books.
I literally have read EVERY BOOK Nathan has written. As soon as it comes out. He never disappoints with his stories of everyman or everywoman
I love, love, love this series! His characters are real people, folks you want to sit down with to enjoy a cup of coffee, or three, while traveling through space.
The first book in a series of the best science fiction I have read in a long time.
Excellent first book in a series. Leads you right into the rest and makes you want to continue the story. Characters are believable and continue to grow throughout the series.
The first novel, which introduces us to Ishmael; an ordinary guy “forced” into a new life. Because he’s not Spacer born, you could say, he’s new to the neighborhood. Therefore, he has no idea what you always do; you could say, it allows him to think outside of the box. I love this series! The best part, this section of the series is already …
A different approach to the usual military/alien/conspiracy sci-fi I usually read. This is a different (and realistic-sounding) universe, with a character I find easy to care about, espousing values I like to think I support. Interesting read, and a nice long series.
Hooked me from the beginning and I just keep on reading to the end with no regrets.
Although I am a huge fan of Nathan’s Tanyth Fairport Series, I am even more ridiculously a fan of the Solar Clipper series. I was introduced to them via John Ward, the great collector of interesting people, who suggested the Quarter Share podcast to me. A couple years later, and not only have I thoroughly enjoyed devouring the entire series on a …
CAN’T WAIT TO READ THE NEXT ONE
I have read this book three times, have purchased all six books of the series and loved them all. This is science fiction as I love it without all the technological claptrap that bogs down many SF novels. Create a universe, people it with normal everyday folk going about their business, and tell a tale. In some ways this reads like just a …
