4.25/5
Number 4 in this series, this one is the last one featuring Montgomery, AL Detective Bobbie Gentry and serial killer hunter Nick Shade as the leads.
This one centers in Savannah where Randolph Weller, an evil killer escapee from Atlanta, leads Bobbie and Nick to investigate the found remains of 4 children who disappeared 32 years before.
Two cases (two killers) are interwoven in this one. While a good thriller (like the previous books), I found it a bit anticlimactic from the buildup over the arc. I was expecting a bit more excitement/intensity in the denouement. And I had already guessed the big surprise at the end.
Still, likable mains, good array of secondary characters, lots of tense moments and evil, gory deeds make this story a winner for me.
This is the third book of the series I absolutely love how it really continues with the other books that you’ve already read on the lines of Bobbies story as well as Nick’s. What’s the third book in the series more revolves on neck and trying to find out who he is it is time for Bobbie to be there for Nick, even that means putting her life on the line once again.
So many twists and turns you will not want to put this book down into the very last page the minute you think you know what’s going on Debra Webbs flips a u-turn on you and keeps you guessing this is one of my favorite series from her.
Plenty of suspense along with some big secrets uncovered. A 32 year old cold case of 5 young kids who went missing along with the continued hunt for serial killer Randolph Weller all collide in Savannah, Georgia.
Detective Bobbie Gentry has swore she is going to be there for serial killer hunter Nick Shade even if he doesn’t want her to. He brought her back from the brink of not caring whether she lived or died and there is no way she is going to let him hunt for his mastermind serial killer father on his own. Along the way she gets called to help out on the cold case in Savannah not realizing that Randolph is up to his old tricks of manipulating everyone to be where he wants them to be.
Along with some creative murders, the investigation to try and figure out what happened 32 years ago and wondering how Randolph is connected, a main character has some major secrets that were hidden from them come to light.
The overarching thread from the previous books is for the most part wrapped up but I certainly hope this isn’t the last book. This is a intense at times, edge of your seat, thrilling suspense series and one I hope there are more books to come.
In every book, I feel that I am still unable to really know or even to figure out just who is committing these murderers. We have Detective Bobbie Gentry, who has been dealing with the loss of her family. Having to deal with trying to still do her job, and getting to the killer before there are more murders.
Nick Shade, is a very interesting person, that has a past that is very haunting. His father is a series killer, who is in prison servicing time for the many murders that he committed. Because of Nick’s father he has built his life in hunting series killers. But his father has other plans that is so sinister to what he wants for his son.
When there is a string of murders, it leads Bobbie and Nick to Savannah. Suddenly, they find themselves involved in past cold cases that have come to light. Let me just say that there is a lot of suspense and mysteries all roll into this story.
With that said, I would have to say that the characters in this story will keep you on your toes. This is a book that you will want to read. But you will want to read the very beginning of this series to know who and if there are more than one suspects in this book. Debra Webb, is a writer who wants her reader to enjoy the stories that she is telling us. The coldest Fear, will keep you turning the pages to see just where the story will take you.
Loved this book. The characters are well drawn and realistic. I read it start to finish in one loong night.
I love Debra Webb books
The Coldest Fear is the third book in the Shades of Death series. You can read this as a standalone, but I really recommend reading the previous books first. Thirty-two years ago five young children vanished without a trace. Nothing pointed to how or why. A current day murder leads to finding four small sets of bones. But where is the fifth? Will they be able to crack the case? Will they find the killer? Are the two cases related? Read The Coldest Fear to find the answer to these questions and more. This book is full of mystery and suspense. I really enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it!
32 years ago five children vanished in one night in Savannah, Georgia. Five family’s lives were torn apart and no clues were ever found….Until today.
Detective Bobby Gentry is called to Savannah and pulled into this cold case by unknown hands but one thing Bobby is sure of, the person pulling the strings is Randolph Weller.
Serial killer Randolph Weller may be on the run, but he is also determined to stage one more deadly game of cat and mouse with Bobby and in doing so, bring his son, Nick Shade, down.
Four of the five children’s bodies have been discovered, but where is the fifth?
As the bodies begin to pile up, Bobby must find out the connection between the notorious serial killer and the disappearance of these children.
Once again Debra Webb pulls us into this story and wraps us in a cloak of suspense and intrigue with a fast paced, clock ticking rhythm to her words, as the story flows from one page to the next.
Each character is well developed and so very complex, each with their own ghosts haunting them from their past and an inner strength to battle for their future.
I suggest that you don’t start this on a night that you have to get up the next morning because putting it down once started is a tough job!
Although this book does work as a stand alone, I suggest you read the series in order….and really, you will WANT to!
