People are growing ill; eyes changing color, burning up with a fever so fierce that it causes them to go crazy, attacking those around them, spreading the infection like wildfire. People are trying to escape the unknown sickness, but there is nowhere to run… nowhere to hide… The only chance for the survival of the human race is to stay and fight. However, they’re unaware of what they’re fighting. … what they’re fighting. What they’re up against is much greater than anything they could ever imagine. This is just the beginning…
Could this be the end of humanity?

This book grips you with the first paragraph and keeps you in its clutches all the way until the end. I loved hearing how the world as we know it is ending from the very beginning and how things progress so quickly within just a few days. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in this series!
I have read a lot of Zompoc books and this one really didn’t have anything new in it (except for the twist toward the end about how the Infected may have been started). However, if you enjoy your zombies with a little campiness, you will probably enjoy this book.
I have to say that I really don’t know how the main characters/survivors in this book were able to survive because they are some of the dumbest people I have read about in a while. Most of the book reminded me of the cheesy teen slasher movies we used to love to hate (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare, etc). If there was something dumb that a character could do, they definitely did it.
Ellie never seems to learn that if there is an abandoned car, it probably isn’t a good idea to open the door. Mike, who is a sheriff, is reluctant to kill an Infected person even after he has seen what they can do. Amanda? Wearing 4 inch spike heels to take her boyfriend to the hospital, then continually talking about having to find said Jasper throughout the book (even though he doesn’t seem worth finding IMHO).
But, I still enjoyed the book. There is plenty of action, but there was a lot of repetition in the actions of the characters. The love that Bill has for his son Benji even after Benji is infected is wonderful. The narrator does a good job and it was easy to listen to him.
I actually liked the (possible) alien twist to the book. In a book that was full of same old, same old, this twist gave it a little something different.
If you are looking for kickass heroes or heroines or lots of zombie killing action, you might as well pass. If you enjoy campy horror movies where you scream at the characters for being stupid, give this one a try.
I was given an Audible copy of this book by the publisher/author/narrator and chose to review it.
Fans of apocalypse books your gonna wanna read this one. This author could give the Walking Dead writers a run for their money.
One day the world went crazy and a group of survivors who had never met before end up connecting and helping each other through the madness.
Ellie was on her way back home to Oceanside California after a weekend Vegas. A simple stop at a gas station changes her world forever.
Sheriff Mike Wilson and his deputies are being called out to numerous locations with the infected. Its on one of those calls he meets Ellie. These two end up back together after Ellie goes through some harrowing ordeals with the infected and non-infected.
Amanda’s boyfriend is showing signs of the infection and even though she was on the verge of breaking up with him her compassion has her deciding to get him to the hospital. She has no idea of the chaos and madness she was going to walk into.
Bill was married with a young son. When the son becomes infected and kills his wife he cant bring himself to harm his son. So he takes off to bring him to the hospital and runs into all kinds of problems getting him there. Once he finally does get there no one is left alive to help him. Amanda, Bill and his son end up banding together.
As I stated at the beginning the writing was right on with detail descriptions of the infected from how the looked and acted and devoured flesh. You felt the fear in each of the main characters through every ordeal and situation they got into and had to get out of. I was devouring the pages as fast as the infected were killing.
This book (as its titled) is The Beginning. That means it does end on quite the cliffy and also a surprise twist that you dont see coming. I cant wait for the next book which is about this groups Survival.
