From the Queen of Suspense and #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a thrilling mystery aboard a luxurious but deadly cruise. Fleeing the disastrous and humiliating last-minute arrest of her fiancé on the eve of their wedding, Celia, an expert on gems and jewelry, is hoping to escape from reality on a glamorous cruise ship. But it is not to be. On board in the most luxurious suite is the … in the most luxurious suite is the elderly and world-famous Lady Emily Harworth. Immensely wealthy, Lady Em is the owner of a priceless emerald necklace that she intends to leave to the Smithsonian on her death.
Three days later Lady Em is found dead–and the necklace is missing. Is it the work of her apparently devoted secretary, or her lawyer-executor, both of whom she had invited on board for the cruise?
Celia, with the help of her new friends Willy and Alvirah Meehan–who are splurging on their wedding anniversary–sets out to find who the killer is, not realizing that she may have put a target on her back.

This was another great book by Mary Higgins Clark. An entertaining mystery set on a cruise ship. Not just any cruise ship, but an old world luxury ship on it’s maiden voyage. Murder, robbery and fraud are among the unplanned events as a quirky group of passengers and crew set sail on this interesting cruise!
Honestly, to me – not her best…. but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mary Higgins Clark and so I did really enjoy reading this book. Moments reminded me of the wonderful movie “To Catch A Thief” with Cary Grant & Grace Kelly.
It’s about impossible to find a Mary H Clark book that isn’t pretty darn close to PERFECT. SO…. with that truth in mind, ignore my first phrase! haha
Thieves, Treachery, and Treasure
Satisfying storyline
No sex
No harsh language
While written in the well-known Mary Higgins Clark style, I felt it was obvious that although overseen by her, someone else did the writing.
I enjoyed the inclusion of characters Alvira and Willy from previous novels.
Setting: Nowadays aboard the maiden voyage of a cruise ship
Main Character: Celia, who is trusted by Em, but whose former fiancé was a crook. For this reason she fears people will think she is the culprit.
Plot no spoilers:
Lady Em, owner of a priceless Egyptian necklace, intends to turn it over to the Smithsonian at the end of a cruise. Of course this draws the attention of a thief; however, the cruise line has been notified that he may be aboard. Authorities are on the lookout.
Easy reading suitable for teens – adults
One week on a maiden voyage of a luxury ocean liner with the rich and famous. A priceless ancient artifact makes the journey and someone is murdered for it. I felt like the dialogue in this book, at times, was more like interviewer to interviewee; however, I was able to move past that. I liked this story. Even though I was right about who the murderer was, I found myself wavering throughout guessing is it this person or is it this person? Mary Higgins Clark is one of my favorite authors of all time and I would definitely recommend this book.
I enjoyed this book very much! A strong plot set among a vibrant mix of practical characters are all aboard this unique cruise for an exciting read!
Finished in one day! Love her books!
Like all of Mary Higgins Clarks books, the story is great, easy to read and the characters are interesting.
Loved it.
as always…so enjoy her books and I share all her books with my daughters
Mary Higgins Clark has always been a favorite author. This isn’t one of her best, but still a good read.
Loved it!
Predictable
I read everything she writes and they always go too fast!
Clark just keeps getting better.
I love Crushing so this was a fun read. Mary Higgins Clark is one of my favorite authors.
I’ve been reading Mary Higgins Clark since I was 13 (a long time ago.) she was my first adult novelist and I couldn’t have picked a better transition author. The young adult novels of my time was Christopher Pike and R. L. Stine nothing like what the selections are now. I might have stayed in the young adult section a few years longer if it did.
She writes a good classic who done it without the gore and adult situations I wouldn’t have understood at 13.
This book revisits her lottery winners Alvirah and Willy Meehan. (The only recurring characters she writes.) You have to figure out who on the cruise ship is the murderer. And yes I got it wrong.
Thank you Ms. Clark for my enjoyable afternoon and the last 26 years.
My favorite author!!!
Liked the short chapters since I have little time to read lately. Kept me interested.
The cozy mystery is a book in the Willy and Alvirah Meehan series. This time the mystery takes place on the Queen Charlotte cruise ship. The Queen Charlotte is a ship reminiscent of the old bygone cruising era which sails with only 100 guests. The story includes similar character personalities of other books in this series. This time the Meehan’s mystery to be solved takes place over the seven day cruise. Jewelry takes center stage and the interesting tidbits on etiquette and jewelry add to the book. There are no surprises but if you are looking for something to read and rest your mind this is the book for you.
