The Hero is the first book in the Sons of Texas series. Unfortunately, it ends on a cliff hanger. I like reading series, when each book concentrates on different people, but not went there isn’t any closure. Yet, I could not put this down and will be reading the next books.
Natalie Dixon and Owen Loughman were high school sweethearts, so when Owen broke up with her right after high school graduation with out any explanation, she was heart broken. She knew that all three of the Loughman siblings would be following the family tradition of joining the military and she had no problem with that, but Owen decided to make the sacrificial decision of her not having to live the life of a military spouse for her. Don’t you hate when men do that!
Natalie went on to college to discover she had a gift for languages and ended up working in Russian, which is difficult for a foreigner. Coming back to Texas, she was offered a job at the Russian Embassy. She is then approached by Owen’s father, Orrin, ex SEAL, asking if she ever heard the word Ragnarok. Owen and his brothers have been estranged from their father, since their mother was murdered. Although Orrin was devastated, he returned to the SEALS, leaving his brother and sister-in-law to raise his boys and run the family ranch.
When Natalie does come across the name, she contacts Orrin, thus putting herself in danger. Shortly there after, Uncle Virgil and Aunt Charlotte are murdered and Orrin has disappeared. The government brings all three of the Loughman men home to find their father and Ragnarok. Owen is more concerned about keeping Natalie safe and realizes he made a horrible mistake 14 years ago when he pushed her away. From the minute they return to the ranch, it is a rollercoaster of a ride. Danger, intrigue and enemies trying to eliminate Natalie and the Loughman men, and the enemies aren’t only from the Russian government. Who can they trust?
Get ready for a thrilling ride full of danger and romance when sexy Marine Force Recon captain Cullen Loughman learns that his father has been kidnapped and he joins up with daring ex – Air Force pilot Mia Carter to find him in Donna Grant’s The Protector, the second book in the Sons of Texas series.
First, let me say that this is the only book that I have read in the Sons of Texas series, although I will definitely be reading The Hero soon, and I had no problem following the story line but this is definitely a series where all the books will have to be read to get the full story. The Loughman Brothers each have a book which tells of his part in the overall story and each book has an ending but doesn’t give away the main story’s conclusion as I have discovered by reading The Protector.
I have read most of Donna Grant’s books and I while I most enjoy the paranormal ones especially the Dragon Kings, she has continued her expertise of sucking me into the story and refusing to let go in the Sons of Texas series. The action is phenomenal and the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Even the romance between the couple in this story keeps you wondering since the danger and the situation keeps them on the run and they are not your average good guys since they definitely have their own way of getting to the heart of things and have you agreeing every step of the way.
All the characters that take part in the overall plot add to the twists and turns and grabs your attention ensuring that you want to know every last detail but of course the main characters, Cullen and Mia take the front seat and steer you through the plot with thrilling abandon.
The Protector is a book that has me hankering for more of the Loughman Brothers, of course after I read The Hero, I will have to wait until The Legend releases in June to get another fix.
Love this series!!
The story I thought was just ok. It had some good action scenes. I think if Im looking for a short listen , I’ll look into the next one.
So this book had a promising start and the story was one that definitely got me interested. But overall, I think some things were a miss for me. Yes, this story is far-fetched, but I really don’t care, I don’t think every story has to be believable because most romances are not. But I think because this involves the military and suspense, that it turns people off. Whatever.
What I did like was the characters. Owen and his brothers are interesting even though, you mostly only get to know Owen in this book. Natalie was an ok character, I think that despite the fact that she works with the Russian’s she was very naive about a lot of things. Callie was great and probably my favorite character. Some things about the story was good, like the capture of the boys father and the mystery around Ragnorak. The action was really good as well. I think that enough of Owen’s and Natalie’s history together gets explained to see why there’s tension when they see each other again.
What I didn’t like is that all this takes place in Texas, at the family home when this is clearly a global issue. The brothers don’t really interact that much. The whole scene at the end when Natalie tries to get information out of a top ranking Russian was just so wrong and unbelievable and the reason this book lost a star.
All in all this book was just ok. It has promise and hopefully the story gets better with the other brothers. But I’m interested enough in the story to want to know what will happen next.
Leaves you hanging
Good start to a new series. Something different from Donna Grant.
I enjoyed reading this book it was a romantic book and I liked the way it turned out.
To be honest, The Hero felt like an action film. There’s some mystery, action, and romance. Everything was well balanced, and I really enjoyed it.
The series is about the Loughman brothers. Wyatt is the oldest. Owen is in the middle. And Cullen is the youngest. All three of them are in the military. And all of them have been avoiding their home in Texas because of their dark past. When their father gets captured during a mission, the brothers are called in for help.
This book is about Owen. When he finds out how his high school sweetheart is involved with the mission, his heart starts beating again. He left her for a reason. And she deserves more than the life he can provide her.
Natalie’s heart was in pieces when Owen left her. It took years to put her life together, but she did it. She learned to survive without him or any other man. But when she sees Owen, she knows that she can’t keep him out of her heart.
The romance between the characters is sweet and touching. Owen is a true hero and does whatever needs to be done to protect Natalie.
My favorite part of this story is that it takes place in Dallas, Hillsboro, and Waco. My backyard. The story even involves Baylor University. (Sic’em bears!!!) It was so easy for me to visualize the cities and campus.
