The stranded plane’s captain, Scott Sanders, takes charge after the crash, in spite of his injuries and the realization that his dream of flying for a major airline is destroyed. One of the passengers, a retired school teacher, assists him while barely holding herself together. They soon realize that time is not on their side in the Alaskan polar climate.
Connor, who’s haunted by the horrors of war and a turbulent past, is torn between ending his life before the inevitable and saving the marooned crash victims before it’s too late. His underlying intentions are unknown, even to himself, until the very end. Aided by an untested protégée and a mysterious young girl found at the crash site, Connor struggles in a desperate gamble to achieve the near impossible. I really enjoyed this book. After a plane crash lands, the passengers come together to help each other. A helicopter pilot who has decided to take his last flight to end his life, must decide if he will instead assist with the rescue. There’s so much more but don’t want to spoil it. It is a great read!
This was a fantastic story–I’ve never read anything like it before! Gil Connor was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and saw quite a bit of action during his tours there. The book goes back and forth between what Connor experienced in Vietnam, and then his service working for an air rescue squad in Alaska. A passenger plane goes down in the mountains in Alaska, and Connor just happens to show up–but his original plan was not to rescue the passengers! I won’t ruin it for you, but note that this book was so good that I was tempted to call in sick to work just to keep on reading it! (I didn’t–but I sure came close!)
It was a great book and my brother was in Nam and it is heartbreaking to think we lost so many men, women and all the dogs who risked their lives. And then the dogs that saved so many lives were put down after we lost the war. Thank God they now bring the dogs home after their tour is up. It is a sad but very interesting story.
Enjoyed the book and the ending was good. Found the author repeated
himself occasionally in the storyline.
Sorry, in a rush, so brief review. . . This was a story with realistic character development and I felt I came to know them. The adventure they embarked on, and the problems they faced, were well-described. I have flown private planes and the author’s attention to detail seemed to make the story all the more believable. No Action Movie CGI here. I would read another book by this author as long as it is of a similar plot scheme — outdoors, flying/driving/sailing, urgent need of action, risks, views into the human soul and why we do what we decide to do.
A great read
Ending leaves you hanging, but very readable.
Great about being a pilot & the dangers, etc.
This book makes you realize how important a job like rescue work is and how dangerous it can be. Very rewarding as well. Makes you want to thank everyone for the work they do to keep you safe.
I can’t say why I liked it but I did. It was predictable, tragic, somewhat inspirational and sometimes irritatingly informative on military details. The girl Lisa is an undeveloped character who seems to maybe take a part. Of course the story includes action and suspense but also a senior citizen and the legacy he unknowingly leaves behind, the generational hand-off.
Loved it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. All of the characters were vividly described, and the events were well-synchronized. I certainly learned more about helicopters than I had ever known. The descriptions of policies and procedures used by men and women of our armed forces increased my awe and respect for them.
Had real life drama in it. Also it kept you unexcited suspense. A read till you Finnish it type of action book.
Unable to read due to B&N issues.
