Completely Yours is the first in Erin Nicholas’s new Opposites Attract contemporary series. It is an excellently written, well-paced, sweet, tender, beautiful story about yes, opposites attracting. It is also about how different people deal with loss and control and healing and coping. And it reveals how we can sometimes get to know and WANT to know people online in addition or instead of those in our kitchen, and how online and offline worlds colliding can be an incredibly good thing.
Zach Ashley, an EMT with a bit of a white-knight complex, and Kiera Connolly, a game designer and occasional princess, meet during an accident at ComicCon in Completely Yours. Talk about opposites–Zach not only has no interest in online gaming, he holds some strong opinions about what a waste of time and energy it is. Kiera’s livelihood is designing games, and not only that, she has experienced firsthand how immersive and connection-building playing games can be. Given those parameters, these two likely would get along about as well as two cats in a bag, but given a compelling reason to spend some time together, they manage to find common ground, and more.
Ms. Nicholas writes so wonderfully–Zach and Kiera, as well as their friends and family, are three-dimensional, interesting, quick-witted, funny, compassionate, broken, REAL characters. Witnessing their pain hurts while seeing their growing trust and friendship and more is a true pleasure.
Completely Yours captures much of the best of two people getting to know each other and learning to be vulnerable and the rewards that brings. The next in this series can’t be released too soon; in the meantime, I’ll just have to reread this a few more times!
Kiera Connelly is perfectly content being secluded in her own little world, she very seldom ventures out of the confines of her home, and is mostly dependent on the internet to keep her in contact with her friends. With a little convincing from her best friends she decides to make an rare exception to her sheltered life rules and attend an Comic-con event, of course this being because she can “hide” herself under her cosplay costume. But her little adventure takes an interesting twist when the roof unexpectedly falls in at the event, and she finds herself being rescued by a handsome EMT. She never expected her little outing to cause her to put her personal safety in the hands of another… but this time it might just be worth the risk!
EMT Zach Ashley swears he has just met the girl of his dreams, she is covered in gold, and currently in need of being rescued from a collapsing roof. So, his hero complex quickly kicks in and he comes to her aid, but then instead of her thanking him, she runs away in a fit of panic trying to locate her injured friends. Something about this sparkling beauty has him rattled, and wanting to follow her to the ends of the earth, but she doesn’t seem to want to be found… or rescued…
At first glance you would think these two quirky characters were a total mismatch, but the deeper you dive into their charming story you soon learn that they have a special way of balancing each other out and manage to prove to you that opposites really do attract. From the instant I started this story I knew I had stumbled onto something special, something that was sure to make me laugh, have me smiling a time or two and leave me with a happy heart… and true to my initial instincts it did! Ms. Nicholas has created a gem of a story here, it was unlike anything that I have read in quite a while, which made for a refreshing change of pace for me, and has inspired me to keep in touch with these two, and read their friends stories that are sure to follow! Highly recommend this one it is sure to have you smiling throughout and reaffirm your belief in happily ever afters!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
Wow! What a great story. I wished these characters were real because I really want to give them all a great big hug, especially Zach and Kiera. I absolutely fell in love with both of them. Zach was hot and a total sweetheart. Kiera was just so adorable and lovable. And together they were absolutely perfect. Their chemistry was wowza and totally made me blush a few times. I loved that this story had so much heart but was also hot and all kinds of sexy. Just my kind of story. I really don’t know what else to say except that I really loved this story. Definitely a must read.
I loved this book just as much as I love other books by Erin Nicholas. I would highly recommend this book.
Favorite Quotes:
‘I should warn you, she finally said. ‘I’m immune to charm.’ ‘You got a shot or something?’ he asked.
Zach tried to picture Aimee sitting around and stitching. As far as he knew, his sister believed clothes magically showed up in the mall, waiting for her and her credit card to rescue them.
My Review:
This was my virgin voyage with Erin Nicholas and it was a sweet and steamy cruise with likable characters and a relevant, current, and interesting storyline. There was an interesting twist of the male character being the nurturing type and the female being the one who kept others at a distance as she believed getting involved with people was “messy.” I enjoyed the fun and easy banter the main characters shared as well as their quirks and flaws as they each find a “new normal” they had not been looking for or ever expected. Written from a third person POV, the narrative was highly descriptive as well as observant, insightful, easy to follow, and amusing. I knew next to nothing about Comic Con, cosplay, or gaming before I started, but I didn’t need to, it was an easy and enjoyable read that also taught me quite a bit about those topics along the way.
I’ve read this series out of order. They make more sense if you read them in order.
I knew this was going to be a fun book, when it started out at Comic Con, even though it was because the ceiling in the exhibition hall has collapsed. But that is how EMT Zach Ashley, the best victim communicator in Boston, first lays eyes on Kierra Connolly. Zach knows nothing about the world of gaming, cosplay, or what attracts people to comics and superheroes. He has been too busy, trying to keep his family and friends safe, ever since he was the lone survivor of an auto accident and was rescued by an EMT, who later died on the way to the hospital. His family has been falling apart since his sister died in another auto accident, and his needs to put them back together again. But Kierra is so shiny and he is so attracted to her.
Kierra is his opposite. Her roommates had to lure her out of the house, get her out of her pjs and away from her computer, where she spends most of her hours. While in college, her two best friends came up with the World of Leokin, now the fastest growing video game franchise, and she is the lead graphic designer. She grew up not only as an only child, but a lonely one. Only twice in her life, she had let people close and both times she had gotten hurt. So despite her friendship with her housemates, she still keeps everyone at a distance.
Yet these two opposites have a lot to teach each other. Can they overcome their hang-ups to realize that opposites can compliment each other and build a life together?
Anyone who has every been a comic reader, drawn to fantasy or paranormal, gone to Comic Con, Dragon Con or any of the other fan conventions will enjoy this book. The characters are engaging and well developed the plot different and all in all a fun read.
Erin Nicholas has a way of taken by situations that could happen in real life &making them into a tender emotional story. She engages the readers emotions from the first scene, in this case the tragic collapse of a ceiling at Comic Con, and then never turns you loose. Her characters are three dimensional, realistic & tough. Kiera is a tough, young graphic designer that holds everyone at arms length. She holes up in her room, working no on her computer for hours on end, staying in her pajamas & ignoring the outside world. Zach is an EMT that excels at being the hero. He tries to take care of everyone, to keep them from being hurt. This goes back to a tragedy in his youth. Can two complete opposites make a relationship work? The chemistry is hot but will Kiera open up her bubble to him? Will Zach ever forgive her when he realizes what she really does for a living? Will Zach relax his tight grip on his sister?
What a great story! Two complete opposites attracted to each other, brought together by an accident & helping each other expand their boundaries & learn to fully live. The secondary characters are just as delightful & add so much to the story. I can’t come up with enough adjectives to describe this book – geeky, tender, unexpected, emotional, hot, sexy, loving, intense…..
