A “dark, twisty, edge-of-your-seat suspense” (Karen Robards), The Vanishing Year combines the classic sophistication of Ruth Rendell and A.S.A. Harrison with the thoroughly modern flair of Jessica Knoll. Told from the point-of-view of a heroine who is as relatable as she is enigmatic, The Vanishing Year is an unforgettable new novel by a rising star of the genre.

I’m a huge fan of thrillers and I really loved The Vanishing Year. The premise is simple: Zoe Whittaker has put her troubling past behind her in order to create a wonderful new future for herself. She has a new name, a new look and a new, penthouse home. Not to mention a handsome, wealthy husband who seems to adore her. And yet… something is wrong. She feels untethered, unable to fully trust or be happy with the life she’s made for herself. And then things turn sinister and she has to unravel the truth from all of the lies.
The Vanishing Year reminded me a little of Luckiest Girl Alive, with both protagonists reinventing themselves and their lives after a troubling past. But they each go in a wildly different direction and kept me guessing. The Vanishing Year was my introduction to Kate Moretti and I’m looking forward to reading her backlist.
Zoe Whittaker is living the life with a rich husband and a penthouse. She’s at a society charity event with her husband, Henry, when she runs into someone from her past. It’s revealed that Zoe had another name and another life that has nothing to do with her current one. From that point on the story jumps to the past then back to the present until her two lives converge.
It’s obvious that though she believes that everything is fine, Zoe isn’t comfortable in her new life. Her husband is not quite the perfect person she wants him to be and she’s good at rationalizing his behavior. But as her story unfolds it shows why she’s hesitant to rock the boat. She needs protection and she’s willing to overlook at lot to get it.
Even though this is a suspenseful read, I figured out what was going on about 2/3’s of the way through. That doesn’t detract from the story at all, and there were a couple of twists at the end that I didn’t expect. Overall I enjoyed the story, though the jumping back and forth between past and present was a bit jarring at times.
Actually Zoe’s old identity seemed like a much more interesting person, but we don’t get to see as much of her. When Zoe is finally is able to connect her past and present, she finally takes charge of her life and becomes much more compelling. (Received a review copy.)

An interesting view of Zoe’s life and how she handles life events. She is not the sharp knife in the drawer, so you have to struggle along with her self enlightenment. I like the ending the best as it played true to her character.
Really enjoyed. I liked the characters and the book was a page turner.
This book is absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Definitely without a doubt in my mind made the all-time-favorite bookshelf.
Read this book. It had my heart pumping, my eyes tearing up, my stomach twisting, it literally affected me physically.
I want to read it again
Some big holes in plot but still a good read
Very good read. Enjoyable and easy but entertaining.
It took me a few pages to get into the rhythm of the story but once I did, it was difficult to put down. The chapters are dedicated to characters in the story so it’s important to pay attention to the title name on each chapter.
