Berenson’s “The Ghost War” is an espionage novel with a terrorism sub-genre, and Berensen ranks high with the masters of this genre. What’s exciting about the novel is the way Berenson handles plot. Operative Ted Beck heads into the dangerous waters of the Yellow Sea to extract Dr. Sung Kwan, a CIA asset and nuclear scientist in North Korea’s nuclear program.
In a lengthy build to the climax of Beck’s mission, Berenson keeps us biting our nails. Can he get Sung out? No spoilers here, but Berenson delivers a plausible story about what could happen if CIA moles and China’s elite politicos upped the ante in the counter-espionage game. Someone in the CIA, the mole, gave up Sung to harm the CIA. Question is, who? The novel’s protagonist, John Wells, has a rep. with the CIA, and he lives up to it when he goes in to NK to find out who set out to hurt Beck’s team.
Berenson knows his audience, and he writes to those who know–and love–the espionage and counter terrorism genre. He liberally delves into edgy politics, but is not didactic, and he neither insults our integrity when introduces technology, nor does he bore us to death with lengthy description.
I give Wells a five star. His “The Ghost War” earned them.
Great action
The best of Sakey’s trilogy, but once you’ve started you’ll probably want to read the other books to find out what happens.
Alex Berenson is the best current thriller writer. Buy and read everything he writes! I have and I’m thrilled with the results.
I really enjoy this character and the author.
How did Alex Berenson learn or invent all of that CIA information?
Didn’t finish. I prefer plot to gory details of how man can kill
I enjoy the main character John Wells and have read multiple books in this series. There are also well developed secondary characters. The action is fast moving.
This series started well and went downhill to the offensive before the author got through trashing his audience. By this i mean, that John Wells started as an action guy without pushing a political agenda. From there he morphed into a full blooded muslim, pushing Islam to the point of brainwashing the reader. i have no prob with people who follow Islam, not radical islam, but its their choice. I do not want to be browbeaten over it , nor read a majority of islam proselytizing in an effort to follow the story. I will not buy any more from this author
Berenson is an excellent writer with always great plots.
Alex Berenson is just plain a good writer. All his books are well done and entertaining; this book is right on par with his other excellent work. He builds his plot lines carefully, develops his characters well, puts his protagonist in unbelievable peril, and gets him out of it with aplomb. Readers won’t be disappointed.
Very exciting and action packed, the plot is a bit far-fetched but entertaining.
