Secrets, scandal, and passion… Selina Rosewall had given up on love, but while helping her brother further his merchant fleet business, she meets Sir James Mitchell, Lord of Penventen. Their attraction is mutual, but what James wants from the relationship goes further–much further–than Selina could have expected. And she learns that in the world of the Ton, scandal and deceit are commonplace. … commonplace. For Sir James Mitchell, Lord of Penventen, it’s hard to say which is more dangerous: being a spy or being considered husband material by the Ladies of the Ton. With political machinations threatening to draw England into the violent wake of the French Revolution, the last thing James expected was to fall in love with Selina Rosewall, daughter of an untitled seafaring family. But when James’ investigation stirs up a hornet’s nest, can he protect Selena from danger that threatens her very life?

James has all the qualities of a wonderful hero… handsome, kind, intelligent, witty, honourable and protective of those he loves. Selina is bookish with a love of painting and drawing and a taste for political tracts and business newsletters. The love story between these two is tender, passionate and romantic. I like how, from the initial attraction, their relationship develops gradually…friendship, talking and discovering how much they have in common.Revolutionary France provides a fascinating backdrop to this tale of intrigue, danger and suspense and the carefully researched historical details lend the story realism.
Elizabeth Ellen Carter recreates vivid historical settings with attention to detail, lovingly threaded through the story so the reader doesn’t notice, but it builds until you feel as though you have sunk into the pages of the story along with the characters. Action, suspense, and strong characters feature. Selina and Sir James get their happy ever after, but watch out for Lady Abigail. She is a fascinating character who gets her own very dramatic story later. Recommended.
Loved this book
Read this series and loved them.
A well-written English romance intertwined with historical data of England’s government and the early days of the French Revolution.
An interesting story set during the French Revolution, slightly before the Regency period, this was a perfect summer vacation read.
A well-rounded novel I could not put down. There is tension throughout with malicious intrigues trying to keep the h and H apart.
This was a good read with romance, deception, intrigue and mystery . Lord James a rogue who was promised to marry Lady Abigail but found her in a compromising situation broke off their relationship and then years later resume it again until at a ball he met Selina. Selina a single woman almost ready to be placed on the shelf due to age is immediately attracted to James when she met him at the ball who challenged not only her mind but his too. Abigail a spiteful snake is trying to make James and Selina life hell because she wants him back and she knows a secret of his birth. Blackmail is on her lips if James doesn’t do what she wants and she willing to sacrifice William who is Selina brother for treason. Lord Chanciessey is enamored of Selina and he’s willing to do anything to get her away from James even if he has to threaten her brother William or her own life.
enjoyable read
Loved the plot. The story was great.
The main characters of this book are Selina Rosewall and Sir James Mitchell, Lord of Penventen. Selina has decided she will never find a match and needs to get out of having her brother support her because so she is opting for a job as a governess or lady’s companion. James is a handsome, disillusioned rake who has recently returned to England, which he left after he found his fiancee in bed with another man. James and Selina meet at a ball and she dances with him in order to help her brother with his shipping business. But the attraction is evident from the their first dance. The mystery and intrigue start when the Prime Minister solicits help from James in a plot that has been discovered, and because it involves blackmailing her brother, William, Selina gets involved as well. It’s a good read, funny at times, frustrating at others, and it’s a well-told story.
Though I loved the story and the characters I must confess that I did not read the book through to the end due to the overwhelming amount of history thrown in to the story. It started feeling as if I was reading a history textbook rather than a romance novel!
I loved this book and look forward to reading more by this author.
Always like a little mystery and suspense with the romance!
This was a sweet story. Fairly engaging as well. One of those books for sheer entertainment. Mind clearing and enjoyable.
