Another extremelly emotional journey by Sophie Jackson is completed. And once again was addicting, amazing and captivating as hell without leaving a gap for not loving it.
An Ounce of Hope is the second installment on the amazing A Pound of Flesh series. For those who haven’t read the series, on the first book A Pound of Flesh, Jackson tells the story of Carter and Kat and how these two fell in love. On the first and a half book, Love and Always, their story continues and it prologues us for Max. Max O’Hare is Carter’s best friend and the male lead character of this book.
This time Max introduces himself to us and, while he battles to move forward and overcome his addiction, he gives us the heart-wrecking and tragic reality of his past relationship with Lizzie that keeps him still bounded and a shell of a man. And here comes Grace. Grace Brooks is a woman that, also, has been through a lot and tries to rebuild herself and move forward as well. So, after Fate “pushes” Max to get to the same place she is, the two of them start getting closer. Firstly as friends, then with benefits and then…….. You have to read it to see what happens in the end!! :*
Everything about this book captivated me and overwhelmed me simply because it has so many emotions combined. And emotions that you can’t help feel too. Also, Max became one of my favorites characters ever because he is like NO other I have read before. He has a rawness and uniqueness that leaves you breathless and speechless. Only an emotional mess – with the good sense. But he is not the only one who is like that. Grace is too. And after a while I stopped seeing them as characters in a book but as real humans. And no, I’m not crazy. Simply, all the difficulties and obstacles they have to overcome and the fights that they have to give and win, pull them out of the book world and transform them into a individuals who could be anyone around me. And it’s not only Max and Grace. The same happened on Carter and Kat, too, although, in a much smaller scale. But it doesn’t stop them from becoming real too.
I was waiting for a long time to read Max’s story, because truth to be told, he had my curiosity and attention from the very first moment I came across him on A Pound of Flesh. I just couldn’t get out of my mind the little bits of info about him that Sophie had included in there. And now that I have read the whole story and got to know him, I have to say that my expectations were burned to the grown because what I got, was much more than I expected. And it’s pointless to say that I don’t regret a nanosecond of the time that I spent reading it. Once again, Sophie Jackson rocked the book world and MY world!
And damn! She couldn’t finish the book without giving me a replacement for my curiosity and attention, could she! And for those who know, I am of course talking about RILEY!!
OMG I loved this book so much.
I hate to say it but I loved it more than A Pound of Flesh. Max and Grace are such incredible characters and their story was truly gut wrenching.
In A Pound of Flesh you meet Max, Carters best friend, and you really like him much because he’s a drug addict and gets himself into all kinds of trouble. Not to mention he was the reason why Carter was in jail to begin with despite the fact that it brought it back to Kat. Then you read the beginning of this book and you have to double check the synopsis because this could not possibly be the same person who pointed a gun at his best friend. This is a 360 degree flip and you see a whole different side of Max, you see the real Max and boy do I love the real, clean, non drug addict Max. This book follows Max as he struggles with being clean and learning to live with the actions he made during his addiction and finding his place. Its a story is his second chance and letting go of his past. You see him grow so much as a character and get to know him and I loved every minute of it.
You also meet Grace who has her own demons and I thought she was going to hide her past from Max, but she didn’t. They are two peas in a pod, the same but not. They each have scars and tormented pasts, but it doesn’t stop from slowing opening up to each other. God did their relationship form and progress is the sweetest way possible. It made me melt like butter. I loved seeing them scared and terrified but pushing through it to experience one another through friendship and other very fun ways. Max was so great for Grace. Let me tell you these two were very hot for each other and it was hella explosive.
I love this book because despite the bad choices Max made, he turned his life around. He isn’t a bad person. Yes, he got dealt a crappy hand in his life with the loss of his son and his girlfriend leaving him. In the end he found himself, learned to live again, and found his future and learned to let go of his past to have that wonderful future. God these books melt m heart in the sweetest way.
