I enjoyed the story, and some of the characters were well developed. The story flows at a decent pace, and I liked the secondary characters quite a bit. Aloysius (Al), Killian’s new familiar was fun and teasing most of the time, but boy, does that cat have some serious power of his own. Some of the language used during sexy times was a bit off-putting; not vulgar, just repetitive things like *throbbing hole, etc. Also, the characters’ dialogue, both verbal and internal does seem a bit younger than the characters are supposed to be.
Killian Barth is a history professor whose most popular class is the history of witches and witchcraft. Now, Killian is a good looking man, and quite a lot of his students sign up for the view. However, Jimmy Janx, is a student with a few secrets of his own. Killian is the Master Witch, and has always enjoyed being around humans and living a fairly simple life, but duties from his people are coming due, and quickly.
Blaine Genneau is the new, openly gay physics professor, and he does not hesitate to try to get to know Killian. Unfortunately for him, although Killian is more than interested, he’s been taught all his life that sleeping with humans will diminish his powers. So, although he’s extremely tempted, and Al really likes Blaine, Killian turns him down.
It has been arranged for some time that Killian and Lavender are to be wed. Neither are interested, and they each have other desires. But the clock is running out, so Killian does something drastic just to have an experience before he loses the chance forever. Unfortunately, this backfires more than once, but the second time is the one that delivers the most devastating blow.
I listened to this twice trying to understand what exactly drove her father’s desire for Lavender to marry Killian, but I’m still not sure about his motives. What I do know is that due to the mess Killian created, Blaine is full of doubt and confusion, and easy to use as a pawn in this political arena of the witches council.
The one thing Killian does know is that the information being taught to his witches is false, and he is ready to resolve this indignity, no matter the cost; not knowing that it will have just as great an effect on him as those he is fighting for. But in the end, we get two happily ever afters, and the suggestion that Aloysius is ready to play and protect once more.
Kirt Graves delivers a fantastic performance and brings the story to life. I’m not sure anyone could make the cat noises required for Al without sounding strange, so that can’t be held against him. His pacing and expressive dialogue really made the story for me.
