#1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford’s “haunting, unforgettable, ice-blooded thriller”* that introduced Lucas Davenport… The killer was mad but brilliant. He left notes with every woman he killed. Rules of murder: Never have a motive. Never follow a discernible pattern. Never carry a weapon after it has been used…So many rules to his sick, violent games of death. But Lucas … to his sick, violent games of death.
But Lucas Davenport, the cop who’s out to get him, isn’t playing by the rules.
“Terrifying…Sandford has crafted the kind of trimmed-to-the-bone thriller that is hard to put down…scary…intriguing…unpredictable.”—Chicago Tribune
“Rules of Prey is so chilling that you’re almost afraid to turn the pages. So mesmerizing you cannot stop…A crackle of surprises.”—*Carl Hiaasen
“Sleek and nasty…A big scary, suspenseful read, and I loved every minute of it.”—Stephen King
“A cop and a killer you will remember for a long, long time.”—Robert B. Parker

Love this series!
I think I have read all but the latest PREY books released, I think that is 23 books.
Another John Sandford success! Great mystery, thriller with entertaining little bursts of witty dialogue. Loved it!
Meet Lucas Davenport, a cop with a hunger for justice, not just for following the letter of the law. Big difference. He’s a great character and in this first-in-series, he’s up against a serial killer who leaves his ‘rules’ for killing on his victims. Fantastic story. The best bit is, if you’re really, really quick, you can grab this absolutely free on Am UK.
great series
Love every book in this series. Great books
Have read lots of Sandford’s books. I love Lucas, but love Virgil more. I hadn’t read this one. Owned it, hadn’t read it. This is the one that first introduces Lucas. Not a lot of back story about Lucas or how he got where he is at this point in time. He seems to be a little bent as a cop, not above taking shortcuts and definitely a slut. He seems unable to help himself since he really loves women. His only restriction is not sleeping with dumb women, so I guess he does have some standards.
There is a serial killer working the Twin Cities and Lucas is assigned to the job of working alongside Homicide to find the killer. The killer leaves notes with his “rules” at each kill. The killer, Maddog, leaves no clues that anyone can find and the police are getting desperate. Lucas uses one TV reporter as bait, but a rookie mistake causes it to all go bad and get a cop killed. Everything is out of control.
This is the most brutal book I remember by Sandford. And even though I like the way it ends there are still some things that I need answers for. Who or what was Maddog’s father? I know who he is killing, but why? And, how and why did he come to the Twin Cities?
But, if this is the first book in the series, it is a definite winner. If I had read this before any other Sandford books, I would have wanted to read more. The later books are somewhat smoother, and not so in your face brutal as this one.
Good read. Good beginning for a series.
Sandford had been my go-to guy for police procedural for 25 years now. i watched his characters (and myself) grow older, have families, watch partners die or move or retire; without any slack in the words or plots.
Um
1st book in the Prey series and it intro the Main Character of Lucas Davenport Cop. Killer uses notes to keep the cops guessing. Davenport is a true ignore the book kind of cop, he does what it takes to get the bad guy even break the law.
John Sandford is never disappointing. Davenport is a great character.
The first Sanford blockbuster spawns a true original in Lucas Davenport and beats “Silence of the Lambs “at its own game.
Can’t go wrong with the Prey series. Davenport is great and the supporting characters are equally interesting.
Great introduction to a character that I have been reading for years.
An auspicious debut for an author with the real – life insight and writing chops of a solid newsman. His rugged, keen- witted and requisitely anti – authoritarian detective with a taste for expensive cars and clothes might read right out of Hollywood, but the twin cities provide a fresh backdrop for his case’s twists and periferal characters.
As always, a great story.
I love John Sandford and all his characters. Lucas Davenport, Virgil Flowers, the Kidd series are one in a million. I have read EVERYTHING he has written since the beginning and never get tired of him.
