The Void belongs to everyone and belongs to no one. Because of the Cultural War Treaty, the federal government or any agent under their control cannot enter the Void. Ruled for nearly sixty by gangs and drug cartels, the “settlers” of the Void must live by their wits and their skill at arms.Raised by scientists who had been sequestered in an underground complex in the Texas panhandle, the Walsh … the Walsh family employs their genius and talents to forever change the quality of life for the citizens of the Void using technologies far beyond the imagination of ordinary people.
When government forces enter the Void on a capture-or-kill mission which has targeted two extraordinarily gifted children, they run headlong into this family of geniuses and Texas Rangers who dedicate themselves to protect the children. The feds soon realize that they are mice attempting to capture one very mean, intelligent cat. The stakes must be raised. Lives are lost. War ensues.

Void of Power: First Generation is honestly one of those books that you look at, read the blurb, have your curiosity piqued, and then dive in and are in for a real treat. When I first saw the cover of this book, I was mildly interested. I read the blurb, and was like…well, let’s see where this book goes. Once I started reading I knew that the author had a real winner on their hands and I could NOT put this book down. I DE-VOURED this book. Yes. It’s THAT good. This book combines the wild west, with post-apocalypse, with a bit of science fiction. This combination is so good I could hardly believe it.
Andrew C. Raiford brings readers an engaging story with just the right amount of backstory to satisfy me and keep me coming back for more. A Cultural War has changed the U.S. as we know it. The government is no longer truly in charge and a treaty has been signed that has allowed a section of Texas to become known as the void where the government (the Feds) are not to set foot without express permission. Children of unique abilities are rounded up and taken to facilities where they are never heard from or seen again, and people are more dependent on each other in these times, but know when to leave each other alone as well. This book is so well written it’s a major page-turner. Being a Texan myself I was ready to pounce if there was any thing amiss, but I honestly have little to complain about.
I was worried with the western theme of this book that it would be too “old west” but let me just say this…this book is perfectly balanced. You get the advances in technology from the descendants of the scientists who were working in the Void when the fighting went down. I love how smart the characters are! But what really makes this book so good is that the author doesn’t lord it over the reader. You are plagued with a lot of technical terms and language that makes you feel inferior. You get the famous Texas Rangers, unique children with psychic abilities, a lot of drama, intense fighting, and some seriously tense situations. For those who like a dash of romance…you get that, too.
As I stated earlier, there is very little that I can complain about concerning this book. There are a lot of edge-of-your-seat moments in this book. There is tragedy, there are happy moments, and there are thrills. I will admit that I was a tiny bit disappointed with one scene where I felt that things were made to turn out a little too perfectly for the good guys, but I honestly can’t and won’t be grudge them that.
I enjoyed this book so much that I honestly couldn’t put it down beyond a few minutes at a time. So it’s safe to say…I didn’t get much done once I picked this book up. LOL! So much drama and trouble brought about simply behind one person’s mistake and another’s refusal to accept that responsibility. If you like a good science fiction/fantasy story with post apocalypse feel then this book is one that you are going to want to grab up. But be warned…clear your schedule because this book is going to suck you in. Plus, there might hints of a second book? Please oh please let it be so!! I want more! LOL! I truly enjoyed this book so much and so I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. Job well done to the author and I can’t wait to read what they write next!
