A trip to state prison puts Jenny on the trail for a stolen necklace and right into the path of a killer… sure that the pendant around Cousin Betty’s neck is stolen, but one thing’s for sure—she doesn’t want to talk about where it came from. When my cousin gets gunned down walking home and the necklace disappears, I realize I’m not only looking for a thief . . . I’m dealing with a murderer.
Can I track down the identity of a man named Jack in time, or will he disappear into the shadows, only to kill again?

Classic PI Cozy Mystery
This is a very good cozy mystery that takes place in the Great Depression-era Texas. Our heroine is trying to get her father sober while covertly running the detective agency It is a good back story behind a really good mystery. Besides being a good period piece, our female lead is doing her best in spite of being in a man’s world. While this is a series, each book stands alone quite well. I have read them all and can’t wait for the next installment. I received this ARC book for free from Booksprouts and this is my honest review.
Jenny Dee is working hard to keep her father’s business going while he works through his alcoholism. She’s a strong independent woman and does everything she can to show the men of her time that she is deserving of their respect. And if they don’t show it, she has her way of making them and they don’t even realize it! It’s interesting how the PI’s worked before the time of computers, smartphones, and Google. How were they able to solve things!

Jenny Dee is having difficulty keeping her Dad’s PI business afloat while he is on his benders. He is unable to answer a call, so Jenny Dee goes to see her uncle in prison. She feels a duty to look into what trouble her cousin is in, as her uncle requests. Betty has gotten involved in some dangerous and shady dealings. Although Betty refuses help, Jenny Dee will continue to investigate, no matter what. C. H. Sessums’ writing drew me into the period and the mystery.

Set in the late 1930s This book has a young woman that is covertly running her alcoholic fathers detective agency. While trying to get him sober she takes on cases that come in. This time it is her cousin who is murdered and a possibly stolen necklace is stolen from around her neck. So she must discover who the murder is before it is too late.. I am enjoying this series set in yesteryear and look forward to the next book.

Since her mother died and her father turned to the bottle for solace, it’s fallen to Jenny to keep his business alive. Often falling to the ruse of her father being “out of town”, she manages – with the help of Attorney Fletcher’s typing needs – to keep things afloat. Sort of.
When Jenny gets a call that uncle Hugh wants JD to go see him, on his death bed . . . in Huntsville . . . in jail; she weaves the usual story of dad being “away” and goes in his place. And that’s where things get interesting! A couple of phone calls, a little bit of finesse, and JD Pierson has him . . . herself a case.
Sessums’ work here is gripping. The story line riddled with feel good moments as well as moments of foreboding. Not all is as it seems and the pages just keep turning until you’ve found out all there is to know. This is a first rate series and I am looking forward to the next adventure!
[Many thanks to the author for the opportunity to read an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my honest review, the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.]
What a fun book! I loved that I didn’t need to read the first book to understand what was going on in this one. Jenny Dee is a level-headed, sensible character- such a refreshing change from the mindless ones in a lot of the cozy mysteries.
A great follow-on from the previous book. It continues the thread of Jenny Dee trying to keep her dad’s PI business afloat whilst he battles with alcoholism. A great story of people trying to improve themselves during depression times in Texas but unfortunately murder is involved. The motive could be simple or much more complicated, but Jenny Dee is determined to get to the bottom of who killed her cousin and where the stolen jewels are.
I received an ARC and my honest opinion is that this is a “must read”. It is interesting, down to earth and totally engaging. I’m looking forward to the next book.
