A new take on Romeo and Juliet only this time there is also a political scheme being waged by ????????
Lady Rose Vaughn, the daughter of the Earl of Somerhold, and Kenneth Curtis, the Marquess of Walsrock, meet at a high society ball and they are instantly enamoured with each other. Unfortunately, Kenneth and Rose’s father are political rivals. This becomes even more evident when Kenneth tries to get a bill passed that aims to help improve the lives of the lower class.
Add to that the fact that Rose becomes betrothed, without her consent, another Lord shortly before Rose and Kenneth meeting, and you have a recipe for disaster. Especially when there is also a plot against Kenneth to make him take the fall for something he tries to prevent. Something that could cost him his life.
This book has a lot of interwoven plots that are guaranteed to keep you enthralled till the end of the book.
I received a ARC of this ebook to read and give an honest review. In addition, I purchased a digital book when it was published at Amazon.

This book wove an intricate web of deceit, political reform and romance. I was impressed by the Hero that he wanted social reform that favored the lower classes and yet did not ignore the prejudices of the ruling class. He came up with a bill that did both. His father tried to sway him against such extreme progressive thinking but to no avail. The H received an invitation to a ball from his fiercest political opponent. His father encouraged him to go for a number of good and sound reasons. When the H arrived, he came upon his father and BAM he saw the most beautiful woman. This woman was the daughter of his opponent. She is the h of the story. The H and h could not keep their eyes from each other. The h revealed she was close to her father and was indeed interested in politics. Which was taboo for ladies. But the H admired the h all the more for her opinions lined up with his. Both of them were close to the people that served them. The H was close to his valet who he saw as a close friend as close as two can get without being brothers. The h was close to her lady’s maid. These relationships gave them an insight as to what was happening in the serving class. The H and h had compassion and wanted their lives improved. Little did they know a dark cloud was brewing over the H’s head and help would come from the unlikeliness of places. The H did not know that someone in his intimate circle was a traitor and it had to do with a buried secret of the H’s family that spanned thirty years. This story had my attention from the beginning and I liked the way the author strung me along page after page. The scenes segued smoothly page after page. The romance was complicated but, in the end, it was untangled. The intimate bedroom scenes displayed loving interactions between the H and the h without being vulgar. Towards the end when the mystery was untangling it was a little anticlimactic when the true reason for all the trouble was revealed. It felt like it was thrown in there without rhyme or reason. I mean I understood the implications of the knowledge and what it meant for the H but I feel it could have been revealed with a little more panache. I really enjoyed reading this book and do recommend it.
Class clashes! Secret trysts! Missing servants! Parental power! Wow…this is a roller coaster ride.
A very good look at issues with the English Government at this time in history. Also, a look into how controlling parents can be and how little power women had over their own lives. This book also showed how love could flourish amid all the problems.
Family forgiveness, romance with the right person, with a bit of treachery and thrills thrown in! Great read.
This is the first book I’ve read by Violet Hamers and will most likely not be the last. Although I think the book was unnecessarily long winded, I thought the storyline was compelling. Including the politics of the day and the class system upheaval added an intriguing interest, as well. But at times all that extra stuff muddied the story of Kenneth and Rose’s budding relationship and did not do a service at all to Noah and Anna’s story. If you can muddyle through all the peripheral stuff, there’s a pretty good story.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
