I grew up reading the historical romances of Georgette Heyer, Victoria Holt (Jean Plaidy), and Barbara Cartland. In high school my honors English teacher introduced me to the Bronte sisters and Jane Austin. I fell in love with the history, mystery and romance that these authors brought to life. As a young girl my favorite authors would magically transport me to another place and time ,far away from the mundane life of a teenager in small town Central California.
So when I first read An Unbending Lady for the Desperate Earl, I was thrilled to find myself again transported to Victorian England. Emma Linfield, does a magnificent job of introducing the stark differences between the social classes of the time. Like Georgette Heyer, her female protagonist are not the typical damsel of the time. In this novel especially, the heroine, shows an inner strength and beauty, caring little for what others may think of her, and thumbing her nose and societal conventions, to follow her father and become an inspector/detective. Emma uses the unlikely romance between her unconventional heroine and the very noble Earl to further demonstrate the problems with the rules and norms that separate the classes. All romance lovers know that opposites attract! And true love will always find a way to break through any barriers, real or imagined!
The historical accuracy that Emma Linfield weaves throughout the this tale is spectacular. I was truly transported to another place and time. The suspense was enhanced by the clever twists and turns Emma Linfield added to her story. I was mesmerized by the plot and completely taken by surprise when the villain was revealed in the end. Masterfully crafted, even Georgette Beyer would be proud!
The best thing about Emma Linfield’s An Unbending Lady for the Desperate Earl was the price. If you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, it is free, but even without it falls in my budget demands of under $5.00 (currently $0.99 on Amazon). A great read at any price!
If you are a fan of Regency era romance, pick up this novel. I am sure you too will fall in love with Emma Linfield.
( Though her titles are quite a mouthful, I must admit!)
“An Unbending Lady for the Desperate Earl” by Emma Linfield
I received an ARC of this story from the author with the hope of an honest review. It took me a bit longer to finish reading this story than the author had hoped… but here I am now. I really liked this story. Although I seem to prefer stories that are a bit shorter than this story. But then there was a lot of ground to cover to solve the mystery of the kidnapping of the daughters of the titled gentry. There was nary a dull moment in this story. So, if the title and the description caught your eye and intrigued your mind. I think you will enjoy the solving of this mystery, just as I did.
It is worth the read. Happy Reading ! !
