But a king he became, and now I’m his servant.
I’m not the same broken princess Malachy Doherty put back together with his callused hands.

Was I reading the same book everyone else did?
I honestly found it immature and drawn out, the “jokes” and how they talked made me think of prepubescent high schoolers. I only made it to 60% because I wanted to find out what this HUGE secret behind the “birthmark” is. But really, it just keeps going, and going, and going. There are too many books that I want to read to force anymore of this.
If someone wants to enlighten me on the secret, please message me!
I have read a few of the reviews hidden because of spoilers and haven’t found it yet.
Triggers: Rape, “abortion”, cheating, excessive use of the word c*nt.

IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT is a different book than the author usually releases. A book with drama, but much lighter than usual. Rory and Mal met in an unexpected way and the connection was immediate. One night and a promise later, they part. Several years later they meet again, but the promises they made to each other after so long may not be so easy to keep.
I love the author’s writing and this one was no different. She can hold you into the pages and makes you curious as the story unfolds. However, I didn’t enjoy the overprotection around Rory. There were many things about her life kept in the dark. And it wasn’t just one person, it was several. I think a secret in a story keeps you curious, but in that case it made me angry that Rory was treated as a fragile human being. There was too much interference and too many secrets that could have been resolved with a good conversation between adults.
It was a lighter book than the author usually writes and it had some pretty crazy stuff, but when it all started to fall into place – and Rory came out of the dark – that’s when I started to like the book more.
Mal is everything. What I like most about LJ Shen’s books is that her characters are far from perfect, EVERYONE does something wrong, but one way or another they try to continue their lives and try to be happy. All the characters of this author are real and we feel this closeness.
This was not my favorite of the author, but I did enjoyed reading this different side of her. IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT is about second chances, a lot of hot scenes and also a wonderful Irish accent (every time Mal spoke “Darling” I imagined Enzo from the Vampire Diaries calling Bonnie that way). I recommend this.
Lies, deceit, undermining in the name of love, protection, self-sacrifice is the wild ride of the game between Aurora and Malachy. The star crossed lovers met in a twenty-four-hour whirlwind love affair. One destined to bind them and destined to destroy all they know. A contract written on a napkin ties their future together. But is the future one they can handle?
L.J. Shen creates an unorthodox paradox of the lover’s triangle in her latest work. However, this lover’s triangle digs deep into the id and super-ego with the ego tamping down the two as they quarrel over the plight of their situation. Shen develops a web of human interaction that interferes with fate all in the name of protecting the ones you love most. She successfully destroys the hero and heroine and unfolds the dirty details of a past better left hidden, a present built upon lies, and a future set in the stars. Shen takes a chance in this work with a stylistic choice of speaking from the grave, utilizing personification in a unique manner, and providing a specific context where changing POV from animate to inanimate which supplies a richness over the entire work. Never fear, Shen is still the risk-taker with all the taboo and anti-heroism mixed nicely with these new elements in the craft. My hats off to Shen for taking In the Unlikely Event to most likely to happen in a paradoxical work that highlights fate cannot be ignored, so it’s best to stop fighting it!
In the Unlikely Event is my new favorite L.J. Shen book! An angsty rock star romance set in charming small-town Ireland full of hilarious banter, intense angst, family secrets, and fan-yourself-with-your-Kindle passion? It’s like she wrote it just for me! Five stars plus a few arsehole sheep for good measure!
