Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.Seven months into her … into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has “a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs” is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron’s irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

One of the most entertaining books I read the year it came out. I was a teenager and very read-in on Nora Ephron’s personal life as well as her husband’s. The selfish childish husband was spot on, and I also enjoyed the wonderful food writing. The late Nora Ephron, who was a famously close and devoted sister and excellent cook who often only ate a …

I listened to the audiobook read by Meryl Streep. It was so fun!!
I remember reading this book when out first came out and loving it. It made me laugh out loud more than once and i even read parts out loud to other people which i never do. Then the movie came out. That probably dropped book sales by the thousands, it was so disappointing. So even if you have seen the horrid movie I highly recommend this book it …
I love all her books.
Total bore. The story is meh and I didn’t really care how it ended — though it did end fairly well. The recipes thrown in were a cute, but they didn’t make up for the rest of the book.
Wonderful story of a marriage in trouble
I expected more from this author. It was an easy read but nothing sets it apart.
Nora Ephron. No more needs to be said.
It is a running dialogue that could have been going through my own head. The writing flows so that you forget you are reading and instead a movie plays in front of your eyes. I finished it in three days. Couldn’t put it down. Or should I say it was unputdownable.
First let me say that I love Nora Ephron. I have read and reread her essays on airplanes, in bed when I can’t sleep, in fact, anywhere I need amusing and insightful companionship. This book is of course well known as a roman a clef about her own life trauma with a cheating husband. It’s interesting to ponder the who and when of it, and what is …
How can you not love Nora Ephron? This was classic Ephron and I enjoyed every minute of loving and hating various characters.
One of my favorites!
