Well written and crafted…a pleasure to read.
As a first time reader of Mr Bennett, I was completely blown away. I read this book so fast I couldn’t believe it was over.
I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. I was completely caught up in the story line. Love the characters, they came Alice before my eyes!
On to the next book!
What a great start to a new series. As Athgar and Natalia start their adventures together, their characters mature and blend nicely. They use their magical abilities to help others, and to search for lost family. They are becoming my new favorite couple!
Paul Bennett hits it out of the park with his new series opener. Great new characters in a brand new situation. It leaves me wondering if his two story lines will connect in the future. I am ready to read more about this one.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review and asked to read this book before the prequel. In my opinion, you should read the prequel first.
Kargen and Laruhk found Athgar in his burning head after some nights had destroyed his village and taking most of the people as prisoners for slaves. They took him to their shamaness and she healed him and their fire mage taught him how to be a fire mage. Then he left to find his people and the people who had turned them into slaves. He went to the city of Draybourne where he met Natalia Stormwind. The two of them started on a trip to find the man that destroyed Athgar’s village and find the rest of his people and discover what the gods had for them to do. This is a well written book and I’m extremely interested in reading the prequels and reading the next book following “Ashes.” Paul J Bennett is an excellent writer and draws you into the story so that you want to know what comes next. This is a very good book…
I always enjoyed a fantasy story especially when is about magical adventures and romance. Natalia and Athgar story is a coming of age tale with lot of action, magic and danger in between learning about their powers, and felling in love. The book kept me on the edge of my seat all time, and I can’t wait for more of these great characters. Loved it!!
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Paul did it again! Every book just keeps getting better. This one is the start of a new series and I can’t wait to see where he takes it next. Fantastic read, I could not put it down
Once again Mr Bennett has hit a home run. His new series is fantastic and fun. The characters are fully formed and so real. Action, adventure, love, magic. All the ingredients for a wonderful new setting. Cant wait for the next book!
With each book, Paul Bennett climbs higher on the list of my favorite authors. Ashes is no different. A great expansion to the universe of the “Crown” series. The magic and the world are familiar, the characters are new with struggles and missions of their own. One seeks safety, the other seeks revenge. their paths and desires cross, intermingle, and something new blossoms. Get this book and enjoy the read.
Looks like the start of another great series from Bennet. I have really enjoyed the Crown series and this one looks like another hit! Kind of obvious while getting backstories that the two will come together somehow but not in a boring predictable way, am looking forward to seeing where this road leads. I did receive an ARC of this book to review
This is a well – written story that will keep you
involved to the last page.
Have your coffee at your elbow and be settled
in your comfy chair because you won’t want to
move until you finish reading.
This book is well worth the read.
Enjoy !!

I don’t normally read fantasy novels. They are not my favorite genre. I will pick one up when I am between books in my preferred historical fiction or horror series. Ashes came along at just such a time. I got an ARC of it and decided to give it a shot. What a wonderful surprise. I really got into this story. I liked the characters and the plot kept me engrossed throughout. Athgar and Natalia are mages – he of fire and she of water and ice. Both come from tragic backgrounds – he survived an attack on his village and she is a “lowborn” who gets into a school to train mages and finds herself about to be used for nefarious purposes. They meet up by chance and the rest is excellent history.
There are strange creatures in the book, and orcs, but in this case the orcs are more than just shambling savages. I liked how the author developed them as a tribe and not just beasts.
I will definitely read the rest of this series.
