After saving the human race from the evil time-demon, Kumbh, in “Demons of Time,” the first book in the Time Travelers series, Tej returns to his own time (3057 BC) and life with Manu Kumar, the man he loves. But his quiet life is quickly derailed when a Wiccan priestess named Nefe and soldiers attack the ashram where the bodies of the contained time-demons are secured. She next goes to Tej’s village in search of Kuntala, one of the greatest time-readers ever. Tej confronts her and in an attempt to save his village from destruction, he allows himself to be whisked to a time-prison where he is tortured to reveal the whereabouts of the time-reader or their friend, Manika. With the help of Mozeek, another time-demon, Tej escapes the time-prison and finds himself smack in the middle of an alien takeover of Earth by an advanced race from Kuryaksh.
The story that follows is complex and thrilling with elements from Indian mythology, fantasy, and science fiction. Tej is a true heroic figure for our time as he struggles with his conscience as he works to save the human race while working with one of his most hated enemies. Over and over he remains true to his beliefs and ethics. The plot moves quickly and covers a lot of ground. The story is about time traveling so there are some drastic changes in settings possible and that keeps things really multidimensional. Over all, it is just a very good story with a fresh and novel approach.
Tej had captured Rigasur and the betrayer now lay on a cement block tied up in chains next to the other two time demons, Kumbh and Vetri but whilst he thought he could now relax with his friend in his small village of Sarp-Nagar Tej is visited by Nefe and her two assistants who killed in cold blood and made all the villagers ill and comatose. In order to battle this new threat Tej travels to a modern highly technologized age where he finds out about an alien race known as Kshins who were out to take over the world. He tried to form alliances but was betrayed time and time again! Can no one be trusted? Poor Tej was the only time-demon with a conscience it seems, but was too naïve for anyone’s good. This book became more sci-fi than fantasy and very complicated as Tej travelled between one age and another doing his best to capture Nefe and save both his village, his people and the world of the future too. I am very engrossed in this series which I am finding very captivating and am dying now to read the last book especially as this book ends with quite an interesting surprise!
Devourers from Suryaksh, the second in Varun Sayal’s Time Traveler’s series, is a delightful addition to the sci fi genre. Thinking himself free to live in peace with his village, Tej once again must fight a cruel villain who is bent only toward selfish and sinister ends.
The characters are witty, charming, and made this reader chuckle throughout. The action is fast paced and plotted like a favorite older sci fi movie. The plot is unique and fresh. Overall, Devourers from Suryaksh is very satisfying.
