“Oh my God, we found a dead body.” The man’s voice, calling from a mountain trail in Cleveland National Forest, was frantic. “Please hurry. I’m so scared. It’s a little kid.” When police arrived, they were met by a horrific sight. The girl was naked and had been positioned in such a way that detectives believed the murderer had seen his kill as some kind of a trophy. As if he were showing off his … his “work”. The little kid was Samantha Runnion, a five-year-old girl who had been abducted while playing in her parents’ garden the day before. Samantha is just one of too many American kids who disappear. Almost half a million children are reported missing every year. And all across America parents are searching for their missing children or–if the worst case scenario has come to pass–the person who killed them.Moms of the Missing investigates ten abduction cases. Through personal and heartbreaking interviews with the victims, it describes how parents maintain their hopes of one day finding their children–some of whom were taken by a stranger, a family member, or human traffickers. And two survivors tell what it is like to be held captive.Moms of the Missing explores the principal types of abductions, and–not of least importance–who’s most likely to become a victim of the epidemic of missing children.

I volunteered to read Moms of the Missing:
Living the Nightmare.
Thanks to the Cozy Mystery Review Crew
for the opportunity. My opinion is voluntary
and my own.
Normally, non-fiction is a genre that I rarely pick up, but when I saw the title of this book and read the blurb, I knew that it was one that I had to read. If you are a parent, I think that this is a book that you must read…for the sake of yourself and your child. I think that while it will stir certain fears in connection to your child, it will also help you be more vigilant as a parent and really open your eyes to the dangers that skulk in this world and that it’s closer to home than we think. Now, this book is NOT for everyone. There are some things that may trigger some people, but for those who do choose to read this, I think that it will be an insightful book.
Moms of the Missing by Steffen Hou tells the different stories of parents and a couple of victims in connection to abductions and disappearances. While this book is titled “Moms” there are a couple of stories that are told by the dads. The author does a fantastic job explaining the reason behind the title of this book, so no one can honestly say that it’s “biased.” Mothers are more inclined to open up and express themselves, while the dads tend to close themselves off. I can’t tell you how many times my heart broke reading these stories. Abductions, disappearances, abuse and so much more line these pages as victims open up and parents recount learning the hard and cruel facts centering around their loved ones’ final moments in this world. These stories span a huge swath of time from when the internet was still young and new, to even before the internet was around.
I felt strongly felt compelled to read this book as I know that there were times when I myself almost found myself in similar situations due to my poor choices in trusting people, but thankfully I managed to evade these fates, so now I keep a wary eye out for my young daughter. I found this book to be truly eye-opening and informative as these parents share not only the heartache and heartbreak that they have endured but the lessons that they have learned as well. They share this with readers so that they can be vigilant, look for the warning signs so that maybe there can be one less child who goes missing.
While this book had some hard moments to get through I appreciate all who shared their stories. I can only hope and pray that those whose loved ones are still missing that they are found and/or that they get some form of closure. This book was excellently written and as I stated from the beginning, a book that I highly recommend that all read. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars.
