Before you start reading this book get a notepad and pen ready. Anne provides so many tips that you will want to jot down. This book offers something for everyone. I found myself shaking my head while reading the book, thinking that Anne nailed the behaviors that I exhibit. I loved the book’s final few chapters on bringing joy into everyday life. So many ideas to help me to stop overthinking things and to really appreciate the joy I have in my life.
This book has really been helping me with my overthinking. I highly recommend it!
If you, like me, can overthink just about anything, do yourself a favor and DON’T think twice about picking up this book. Just do it. By the end of the introduction, I was nodding along in recognition–and convinced that maybe learning to laugh at ourselves is the first step toward ending our maddening cycles of indecision, wavering, and second-guessing. DON’T OVERTHINK IT is full of small, relatable, useful tips that have stayed with me weeks after turning the last page. Anne Bogel’s voice is so level-headed and makes such good sense, I found myself wishing for a special covid-era edition. If you’re drawn to this topic, it’s hard to imagine better than this guide: smart, friendly, and succinct enough not to be overwhelming.
Will I still overthink? Most definitely but she has a lot of great tips and strategies to help. Looking forward to trying out some of her ideas.
“Don’t Overthink It” by Anne Bogel was life changing to me! I am definitely part of the overthinking club! I overthink everything, whether it is a small or large decision. I have struggled with this all my life, and many times I’ve wished I could change or at least somewhat conquer this. Anne Bogel gave me hope that I can get a handle on this.
This book is full of easy to use strategies to help those in the overthinking club! It is a very easy read and Bogel also shares some real life stories of her own life. I have higlighted much of this book, but one of my favorite quotes from her is when she is talking about perfectionism. She says, “The remedy is to give yourself permission to fail-failure being defined as “anything short of absolute perfection”-and grace when you actually do.” (p. 43) I love this! Sometimes we think about giving other people grace, however, we forget about giving ourselves grace!
I definitely recommend this to anyone who overthinks. Anne Bogel is a very talented, down-to-earth author. I have enjoyed every book that she has written.
I received this book from Baker Books for my honest opinion.
Man oh man, this book couldn’t have come into my life at a more PERFECT time. Don’t Overthink It: Make Easier Decisions, Stop Second-Guessing, and Bring More Joy to Your Life by Anne Bogel is the exact self-help book that I needed to cope with the craziness of 2020 so far. But not only that, this book helped me with a lot of things that I’m hung up on currently but know I need to get over, things that have made me feel stuck in the past, and so much more.
This is a book that I’m going to read over and over again.
On just my first pass through, I highlighted SO many passages. I cannot wait to re-read this already. I’m also excited to see what new passages stick out to me at different stages of my life when I pick it up for another re-read.
Don’t Overthink It by Anne Bogel is the type of self-help book to read once (or more) every year. Though the book focuses on how to deal with overthinking, much of the advice applies to overall mental health. Chapter 5 (Take Time to Make Time) and chapter 11 (Rituals to Rely On) resonated strongly with me, but practical suggestions fill the pages of every chapter. There is an emphasis on preserving mental processing/decision-making power by streamlining or outsourcing activities as needed. Almost exclusively, the book focuses on smaller decisions, not big life changes. I found that the advice and practices by the author could be implemented right away.
I recommend Don’t Overthink It: Make Easier Decisions, Stop Second-Guessing, and Bring More Joy to Your Life by Anne Bogel to anyone, though the book seems targeted to women. Whether overthinking rates as minor hinderance or a major issue, this book offers suggestions to empower one to make healthy choices.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
If you’re prone to anxiety, overanalyzing, or both (raising my hand here), then Don’t Overthink It is for you. With an approach that’s as forgiving as it is practical, Bogel tackles everyday energy-sappers like decision fatigue, technology overload, and self-sabotage disguised as data collection. Bogel’s advice on building in margin for the unexpected feels especially on-point right now—I found myself picking her book back up this week to reread the section on building in wiggle room for life’s what-ifs (hello, coronavirus) instead of operating at 100% capacity, as we’re so often advised to do. Highly recommended.
Just starting to read and love it!
This book will be a permanent fixture on my nightstand.
Ruminating about decisions and problems can waste all kinds of time. In this upbeat and encouraging book, Anne shows readers how to escape this mental trap and free up space for life’s adventures.
Reading Anne Bogel’s words feels like having a conversation with your calmest, most reasonable friend u2060— the one who gives you the advice you most need to hear. Get ready to feel happier, less panicked, and more at peace before you even finish the book.
As a professional overthinker, I thought that I had overthought all the ways in which I overthink and the negative consequences of overthinking. My overthinking has led to anxiety, insomnia, doubt and FOMO. Not to mention a whole lot of time wasted. Until this book, I was not fully aware of all the dimensions that overthinking can creepy into my mind. Analysis paralysis, rumination, indecision, spinning – here Anne Bogel pulls you up a chair to share, connect and grow through these unhealthy thought processes. Leading with compassion, Anne shares her experiences with the topic, expert research she’s conducted and loving tips on making healthy change.
This slim read is full of relatable stories and ah-ha moments. Each chapter includes reflection questions to turn thinking into doing. I have been a reader and listener of Anne’s work for the better half of a decade. What brings me back is a feeling that I am in good company of connection and kindness. This book is categorized under self-help; I’d call it self-realization and self-care.
(Thanks to NetGalley and Baker Books for providing an ARC of this book.)
Analysis paralysis. Rumination. Perfectionism. How do we fight these and so many other types of overthinking? Values-based decision making. Completing the cycle. Simple abundance.
Is this a self-help book? Of course. Is this a self-righteous book? Obviously you don’t know Anne Bogel.
Fans of her blog, Modern Mrs. Darcy, and her podcast, What Should I Read Next, will be familiar with Anne’s talent for bringing universal subjects to an intimate level and helping us see them with fresh eyes. (See: any of her periodic What’s Saving Your Life Right Now? posts.) She is unassuming, inclusive, and congenial. You could easily see yourself meeting her at the local coffee shop to talk books and catch up on each other’s week. These are the strengths she brings to her book.
The thoughts, ideas, and processes that Anne shares in the book aren’t highly original; we’ve heard them before, seen them elsewhere. The genius of the book is that she’s brought them all together in one place and presented them in such an engaging manner. She speaks directly to you. She speaks directly to me. She tells stories from her own life to underscore the points she’s making. And it’s all done from a true desire to help, both on a personal level and in the larger world.
Life-changing is an over-used term lately. But it’s accurate for this book. Reading it has changed my life for the better. It will be re-read many times and loaned to family members. It will be recommended every chance I get. There are very few books I can say that about. My rating is five stars and then some.
