On a planet with six suns, night is about to fall for the first time in two thousand years . . . The planet Kalgash is on the brink of chaos—but only a handful of people realize it. Kalgash knows only the perpetual light of day; for more than two millennia, some combination of its six suns has lit up the sky. But twilight is now gathering. Soon the suns will set all at one—and the terrifying … the terrifying splendor of Nightfall will call forth a madness that signals the end of civilization
Isaac Asimov’s short story “Nightfall” first appeared in 1941. It has since become recognized as a classic, its author a legend. But the short story isn’t the whole story. Now, Dr. Asimov has teamed with multiple Hugo and Nebula Award winner Robert Silverberg to explore and expand one of the most awe-inspiring concepts in the history of science fiction.
In this novel, you will witness Nightfall—and much more.
You will learn what happens at Daybreak.

Great SciFi plot. It’s a classic. The original novellette, by Isaac Asimov, was adapted as a radio play on Dimension X and X minus one.
Not one of Asimov’s best. Utterly predictable and somewhat slow. Did not finish it.
Thought provoking. If you get the allegorical meanings about prejudice and paradigms it should make you consider your outlook and those around you.
Classic Asimov with well-developed characters and plot.
I first read this as a short story by Isaac Asimov many years ago. I loved the story even if it ended in a cliffhanger. Now a “sequel” – or Part 2 – has been added and made the whole thing into book length. I liked what they did to show the outcome of night coming to the planet of 6 suns for the first time in over 2000 years and what it was …
I bought this book for the nostalgia- I had read Asimov’s Nightfall short story years ago. Although I enjoyed the development of the characters the whole theme seemed too simple- only the scientists can overcome and remake the world. The ending didn’t work as well as the developing of the plot up to the tragedy.
sci fi classic!
An implausible science but really well written with the concept of what if the world was based on the 2000 years of no starlight and then night comes with the stars. How would civilization change. Much more challenging that a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court but a similar premise – one person’s science in another’s religion or magic.
I read the original short story, which I really enjoyed. This just ran on too long.
Excellent book that I have read several times
starts slow, picks up speed fast… sharp characters…. great story..
Imagine a world where it is always daytime, then one day night begins to fall. They may have gone you one better!
It was interesting and kept my interest throughout. Not spectacular, but interesting.
Trying to stretch Asimov’s original short story “Nightfall” into a full length novel completely diluted the impact of the original, filling it with dozens of extra characters and extraneous plot diversions. I made it about two-thirds of the way through before giving up in disgust.
Short story originally written in 1941, 77 years ago, and then expanded to a full book in 1990 combined with Robert Silverburg to make it a full novel. The concept behind it explained to me for the first time why we have had periodic large fires in the world that did huge damage. He doesn’t write a bad book. He was paid $166 for it and it is …
The first Asimov book I read and I feel in love with his writing. I devoured everything he wrote after reading this. It is a classic.
I think the short story is better than the novel; however, I still rate this as a pleasant read. I am not a big fan of the ending (no spoilers here) and the characters are a little underdeveloped, but, hey, it’s sci-fi and the science is pretty decent.
