A Cry in the Dark was another great book by Denise. I was so excited for this series from the moment Denise mentioned it was happening and she did not disappoint. This book is full of mystery, suspense, and even a little romance. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing through the entire book. If you love Rose, you should give Carly a shot. I bet you will fall in love with her too! Now I have a whole new slew of characters that I’ve fallen in love with and I can’t wait to see what they get up to next!
This is the continuation of a loved character going off on her own. Carly was introduced in the Rose Gardner mysteries and is now on the run with a new identity, trying to hide from her past and stay alive. This book takes her into a small town where she accidentally ends up needing to stay for a while and she immediately finds a job and a place to stay. Circumstances become risky when she witnesses something happen outside her window. She has to choose whether or not to risk exposing not only her identity but also her heart as she wonders who she can trust, especially the handsome tow truck driver that helped her get into town.
This was everything! I devoured this book in a day. Carly is running from her past, from the people she trusted the most and want to see her dead. She just wants to go unnoticed and keep going, doesn’t know whom to trust or lean on. When on the run, her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and she is on the verge of losing the little hope she has left. A man finds her and offers her assistance, but with her trust issues and unwillingness to let anyone near her, ends up biting her back when he starts to be suspicious of her. And even more when Carly lands herself in the middle of a murder investigation, and with being the only witness she is stuck in Drum for the long haul. With Drum being a little town in Smoky Mountain where secrets rule the townsfolks and outsiders are seen as threats, Carly will need to suck up and stand up for herself and her new kin to survive to be in the middle of everything shady.
I loved this book, the characters were so complex, and I felt like I was meeting them along with Carly. I want to know everything about them, what is Wyatt and Max’s story? What about Ruth? What’s Hank’s backstory? Also, let me tell you, Wyatt has put half of my book boyfriends to shame. He is very protective of everyone he considers family and somehow I’m a fan of his lack of poker face and directness. For Carly, I loved seeing how even though her world is a farce and she is on her breaking point, she puts her big panties on and faces things head-on.
“And in exchange, I guarantee that I will give you one piece of information the sheriff doesn’t know”
“What is it?” he asked.
I dialed up the attitude. “If I told you now, then we wouldn’t need an agreement, would we?”
“I want them to leave the table”
Bingham gave me a cold stare. “We don’t have any secrets”
“So fill them in later. You don’t see me bringin’ my friends over to hold my damn hand”
The mystery aspect of this book was off the charts, we obviously needed to find who murdered the boy and at the same time discover who was trustworthy and should be protected. But, we also had a big plot twist at chapter 30 and I was really surprised, without actually saying anything about it that might spoiler, let’s just say this will set a new set of a chain reaction for the next books, and put Carly in a bigger bullseye.
You don’t need to read Rose Gardner/Neely Kate Investigation Saga to understand this book, BUT you should because it’s awesome. Still, you can dive right in free of worries but you may have to infer some stuff and probably wait a little while (almost 80% in) to get the FULL story about Carly’s past.
Now if you have read Rose Gardner/Neely Kate Investigation Saga and are a little hesitant about diving in, please don’t, even if this new (and I’m guessing the whole saga) has a Rose vibe (I mean this is the same Carly we met in Up Shute Creek) the characters are completely different and the town has a different feeling than Henrietta. You will not feel like you’re reading the same story with different names.
I fully recommend this book for those who love a good romance mystery <3
This was a great spin off to a already wonderful series! I’m a faithful reader and will continue to read this series. Denise did a fabulous job keeping me on the edge of the seat.
This is the first book in Carly’s new series. She first appeared in the Rose Gardner Investigation series. However, the author does a good job of catching you up to speed on Carly’s backstory, so it’s not necessary to have read the other series to understand what’s going on. (I do highly recommend it though, because at some point, I think the story lines will re-connect.)
The beginning is reminiscent of how Carly was first introduced in the Rose Gardner investigation series, proving that if Carly didn’t have bad luck, she may not have any at all. The storyline is well developed and sprinkled with interesting new characters that are sure to be main staples through out books to come. The plot is a mixture of mystery and subtle romance and I was pleasantly surprised that I couldn’t easily guess the outcome. I really liked the introduction of Wyatt. He’s a complex character that is more than he outwardly appears and his family dynamic is sure to prove quite interesting in books to come. I look forward to seeing how Carly will tackle her past along with the new obstacles she’s sure to face staying in Drum.
This book was amazing!! I just now realized that I finally let out that breathe I’ve been holding. You will hit the ground running and you are literally on the edge of your seat the whole time. The suspense kept me on my toes throughout the entire book. The chemistry between Wyatt and Carly was off the charts intense. The friendships and bonds that are made will give you all the feels. I love this whole cast of characters. This is why Denise Grover Swank is a Queen! This book will knock your socks off! Buckle up, because it’s gonna be one hell of a ride!
What a great start to a new series! We met Carly briefly in a couple of Rose Gardner Investigates books, and we got to know how sweet and caring she could be. That comes across again in spades and shows us that Carly is truly a goodhearted woman. I believe even Rose would be very proud of Carly Moore and how she handled herself since moving on from Henryetta.
Carly is on the run, and not like you think, it’s not the law that she is running from. She seems to have terrible luck with cars and is stuck in the small town of Drum. With what she has been through already, she finds if very hard to trust anyone. Anybody could work out who she is and alert the wrong people. On her first night in town, she witness a murder that unravels a whole load of trouble, and not just for Carly.
I loved it! Really loved it. If you like a good mystery that has you thinking and wondering what is going to happen next, and has you saying out loud, OMG, then this is the new series for you. It is a classic Denise Grover Swank novel, so that means you will get those rich and bona fide characters from her that we adore. I started this book, and literally got annoyed every time I got interrupted. I considered forgoing my dental appointment just so I could finish it. As luck had it, I couldn’t put it down all morning, so I had it finished in no time. All the characters will keep you entertained and some you will love just as much as Carly does. Some, are not so savoury and this makes for a very interesting book indeed. This book has one major mystery that is following Carly wherever she goes, and will take a few books to solve, but it also has another mystery that gets a conclusion in this first book. If you are a fan of DGS, Rose and Neely Kate, you will simply cherish Carly and how she has grown from living with Rose.
Wow wow wow!!
Where do I begin?!! Pick this new series up. It is absolutely out of this world!! I was unable to put this book down and when I had too, (because of mommy duties) I was constantly thinking about the book and what on earth was Carly going to do!!
This series follows Carly as she travels to her new destination. My jaw dropped several times while reading, and I had a rollercoaster of emotions. I was literally on the edge of my seat. It’s such a nail biter! SO freakin good! If you love a good mystery book, pick this book up!! You will not be disappointed. I absolutely loved it!!
Looking forward to book 2, Her Scream in the Silence!!
