“Brilliant…as fascinating as it is original.”—St. Louis Post-DispatchFrom New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman, the first novel in his series featuring Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn & Officer Jim Chee who encounter a bizarre case that borders between the supernatural and murderHomicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered … there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place—a corpse with a mouth full of sand—abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.
There is palpable evil in the air, and Leaphorn’s pursuit of a Wolf-Witch leads him where even the bravest men fear, on a chilling trail that winds perilously between mysticism and murder.

A good story and well written.
I’ve read all Hillerman’s books. Read this many years ago and when it came up decided to re-read it.
Joe Leaphorn and the Navaho way are always interesting reads. Easy to figure out the “who dunnit” part though.
Good plot, great description of Southwest geography.
i always hope he knew what he was writing about
It is always a delight to share Tony Hillerman’s knowledge of the Navejo world
Tony Hillerman’s books are always outstanding. Your really delve into the culture — both in the past and as it is in the present. Real page=turners
Hillerman is never disappointing
Terrific book. First book in the Leaphorn/Chee series. The development of the characters was well done. Hillerman’s description of the scenery are lyrical. I learned a lot about the Navajo culture. Plus it was a good mystery.
Learn more about the wonderful land and people of the Southwest while enjoying a good police procedural.
Great series! Don’t miss these books. Intriguing stories and great information on the Navajo culture.
