Just before summer begins, 13-year-old Ali finds an odd photograph in the attic. She knows the two children in it are her mother, Claire, and her aunt Dulcie. But who’s the third person, the one who’s been torn out of the picture? Ali figures she’ll find out while she’s vacationing in Maine with Dulcie and her four-year-old daughter, Emma, in the house where Ali’s mother’s family used to spend … to spend summers. All hopes for relaxation are quashed shortly after their arrival, though, when the girls meet Sissy, a kid who’s mean and spiteful and a bad influence on Emma.
Strangest of all, Sissy keeps talking about a girl named Teresa who drowned under mysterious circumstances back when Claire and Dulcie were kids, and whose body was never found. At first Ali thinks Sissy’s just trying to scare her with a ghost story, but soon she discovers the real reason why Sissy is so angry. . . . Mary Downing Hahn is at her chilling best in this new supernatural tale that’s certain to send shivers down her readers’ spines.

I loved this book and left me craving for more! It’s one of those tales you tell around a campfire, the one where the little kids say there to scared to ever go swimming again and the one that is the perfect amount of spooky for the older kids! I think that if you like Mrs. Hahn’s writing then you will live this tale!
This is the first book by this author I read… and It was an excellent read! I was in the mood for a good ghost story and I got one! I loved the explanation of what ghosts are and where and how they reside….. I fell right in!
This book is a perfect MG spooky story. Downing Hahn does an awful lot in this little book, including exploring family dynamic, grief and the psychological trauma of not dealing with our feelings, as well as a girl’s incredible transition during her preteen years. I’m going to spoil some things below…

The …
so amazing for grades 4-12
To be honest this is one of the first books i actually read and not flipped through the pages.
This book is phenomenal, I love the information, and the feeling you get from the book.
What can I say about this book? It was the first book I ever read by Mary Downing Hahn and I ultimately loved reading it! I might have been even happier if my first book by Mary Downing Hahn had been Wait Till Helen Comes since I have been waiting to read that book for a long time. It was on my TBR pile before I even found this paperback for sale …
This book is AMAZING!!!!!
This book is shorter than other books I usually read so I finished it pretty quick. It’s an ok story but really weird. Not scary to me. There’s one character I absolutely hate. I wouldn’t read this again but everyone has different tastes in books so give it try if you want.
Amazing writer!
