If you like space opera adventure with a romantic twist, don’t pass up this book. The second in the Obsidian Rim series it follows the most unlikely of heroes: a woman who is set to destroy a world of qubition miners to make sure q-bombs are never made again–no matter the human cost–and a man on that world trying to set the miners free from their slave masters and give them a life and an economy that allows them to be free and sustain themselves. Great adventure, characters, some humor among the dramatic moments, and a good, though rocky, romance to tie it all together. Good page-turning fun!
A very unique setting — mining slave colony — and very unique characters! Set in the very far future, nevertheless the author makes the tech aspects easy to follow and relatable. The emphasis is on the thriller plot but the romance is also believable and hot.
The first book in the Edge of Sunrise series also part of the Obsidian Rim series, what a story it is well written with a very good storyline and the story flows across the pages. I want to read the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Superbly suspenseful
Elsa Jade is one of my favorite SF romance authors, and if you read Rock Rift, you’ll know why. The mining asteroid of Ydro-Down is the property of Q Corp. So are the miners – enslaved for life, under nearly unbearable conditions. Gavyn’s goal is to lead his enslaved people in a revolution, a takeover of the asteroid, the mines, the profits, and the creation of an independent Ydro-Down. Lumia, newly appointed corporate intercessor on Ydro-Down makes known her sympathies to the miners’ cause, but keeps mum on her true identity and purpose – the death of the Q Corp boss of Ydro-Down. Her mission is to assassinate, but her growing respect and sympathy for Gavyn’s cause, and her growing attraction to Gavyn, throw all manner of monkey wrenches into everybody’s well-laid plans. Danger, betrayal, seduction, and high-stakes plays for power fuel the suspense and generate the adrenaline on nearly every page. It’s a love story, a political thriller, and a great addition to the Obsidian Rim series. I want more! This is a voluntary ARC review
An enjoyable & very suspenseful Sci-Fi romance with a well-written, captivating plot filled with unexpected surprises & events. There are some good scene descriptions & information details. The individual characters are quite unique, interesting & at times rather unpredictable.
There is: a rather reluctant hero (Gavyn Grey) & a turned sympathizer (Lumi Swinton), a devious company (QueCorp), twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, drama, some humor, threats, danger, adventure, action, rebellion, deceit, betrayal, manipulations, devious plans, memories, distrust, sabotage, missions, doubts, threats, enemies, conflict, violence, rescue attempts, confrontations, termination orders, conflict, life-threatening incidents, declaration, love & a HFN ending. I would recommend this Sci-Fi romance.
I’m loving the concept of the shared universe created by the authors of the Obsidian Rim books. The several authors’ series within this universe are all separate from each other but work with each other using the general background of the Obsidian Rim region. I got into this overarching series because it’s first book, Gravity, was also the first book in the Cryoborn Gifts series by a favorite author, Maggie Lynch. It was so good that while waiting for its book 2 I figured it would be worthwhile to see how other authors treated this universe. Elsa Jade was the second such author. Her first contribution was Rock Rift, first in her Edge of Sunrise series (and Obsidian Rim Book 2). That book, on turn, was so much fun that I simply had to turn to Fire Strike: Edge of Sunrise #2 (Obsidian Rim Book 5). These two books were total addictive pleasure. The stars here, reluctant rebel Gavyn Grey and administrator turned sympathizer Yumi Swinton in Edge of Sunrise #1, and Arjay and Tick in Edge of Sunrise #2, really make these books. They’re wonderfully crafted and genuine while very unique in their backgrounds and personalities. That’s a neat trick to carry off yet this author does it on style. I love sci-fi romance when it’s done right, i.e., where the romance feels real and the sci-fi is good sci-fi and not just an excuse for lots of sex. These books easily pass that test and are a true treat to read. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author and will be happily willing to try out of Obsidian Rim series by authors who are new to me.
There isn’t a book that Elsa puts out that I haven’t loved. Witty, sexy, with just enough grit to make you dig in. I rarely ever read Sci-Fi, but Elsa has a way of making me want to read Sci-Fi and more! This series is just AWESOME!
