Ain’t Nothing But The Devil is a 277-page read and for the most part, this is a good Billionaire Bad Boy novel. You do fall for the naughty boy Lee until you find he’s been harboring a deep secret from his wife Madeleine. Madeleine is best selling writer, who has been depressed since the loss of her stillborn son two years in the making who seems to have an alter ego Evelyn whom she converses with and allows her to egg her on. It seems that they both have been following their own path with Lee deep into the booze and Madeleine falling deeper and deeper into a depression that Lee doesn’t see nor do the Atwood family seem to realize being that they are a close-knit family and all. There is a deep routed secret Madeleine is secretly in love with Lee’s brother Adrian who is also a Billionaire, which causes a big riff in the family, however, Lee doesn’t know about it yet, and it is about to tear a big hole in the family dynamic.
I do recommend this book, as it does keep you guessing and the need to turn the next page to see what will happen next. I do give it a 5-Star rating.
This book was gifted to me by the Author Lorelai Watson.
Wow, this was not what I was expecting when I first started reading this novel by Lorelai Watson. This story touches on wealth, unhappiness, alcohol addiction, depression, suicide, unfaithfulness, anxiety. This book touched these topics as well as made you apart of the story, creating real characters who are far from being perfect as each person has their own demons that they are facing. I felt so much emotion as well as knowing that money can’t buy you happiness and covering up your problems with alcohol doesn’t solve anything. I really loved how this story turned out as it did take some turns and twists that I was not expecting. If you like a story that is not all about romance but has strong drama real life truth then I would highly recommend that you read this book.
5 stars for Ain’t Nothing But the Devil by Lorelai Watson. This is my first book from this author, and I can tell you it will not be my last. This book was well written and deals with subject matter that many would have a problem writing about. I found the way Watson approached suicide to be real and no frills. “I read an article about depression the other day from a Methodist minister up in Ellijay. He said depression ain’t nothing but the devil,” Maggie Beth stated. “He’ll lie to you all day about your worth until you believe him.”
The book starts off serious and stays serious the whole way though. We get a glimpse into how deep Maddie’s depression goes. We see the pain she is having to live with every day. We see these things while Maddie is at her lowest point. This is when the story grabs you and keeps your attention all the way to the very end. Lee is Maddie’s husband who at first I did not like at all . I did come to release that he himself has his own demons that he is dealing with. “Because it was beyond your ability to understand someone else could care about you that much. As cheesy as it sounds, you can’t love someone else until you love yourself. It made sense to me, even then. That’s a big reason why I wished I tried even harder. Maybe you would have realized you were worth it.” Then we get to meet Adrian, who is Lee’s brother . I loved him from the start. He seems to be the man that every woman would love to have. We do learn that he is dealing with issues too. For as much as I liked Adrian, I disliked Lee. We do see a turn around in him but is it too little too late. “Sin begets sin”.
This book is heavy, I will night lie there are parts that are hard to swallow. There were times when Watson’s writing literally took my breath away. I have put off writing my review because I could not describe the book to the depths it deserves. The way that Lorelai Watson covers subject matter like cheating, suicide, death, divorce and falling in love with someone you shouldn’t intrigued me in a way no other author has. “But what good are words when they’re not delivered in the right way or time?” I think I highlighted more than fifteen spots in this book and to me that says something about how much I loved this book. While I did think there where parts of this book that where heartbreaking, I believe that the main point in this story is dealing with the bad and finding the good.
I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone until you have triggers. If things like suicide, cheating, alcoholism, or divorce are triggers for you then this book might not be for you.
My absolute favorite character in this book was Evelyn–but you’d have to read the book to understand why.
