In this riveting, high-octane thriller from Lincoln Child, an ancient creature is inadvertently released to wreak havoc on the inhabitants of a desolate arctic landscape. Alaska’s Federal Wilderness Zone is one of the most dangerous and inhospitable places on Earth. For paleoecologist Evan Marshall, an expedition to the Zone offers an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study the mounting effects … mounting effects of climate change. But once there, Marshall and his intrepid team make an astonishing discovery: an enormous prehistoric animal encased in solid ice. Despite repeated warnings from the local village, and Marshall’s own mounting concern, the expedition sponsors want the creature cut from the ice, thawed, and revealed on a live television spectacular…But then the creature disappears and an unspeakable horror is unleashed.

Lincoln Child offers another heart-pounding thriller when a group of scientists and their television-show-producing sponsors uncover a prehistoric monster frozen in the ice of the far north. Then the monster disappears before it can be defrosted on live television and the whole expedition falls apart. While the sponsors and their award-winning documentary producer search for a saboteur/thief among the scientists and crew, people begin to die horribly. Rather than make the sponsors rethink their initial assumptions, the deaths only increase their paranoia. But who or what is doing the killing? If you’re the reader, you’d bet your money on the monster waking up after its long cryogenic sleep. But what exactly is the creature and how are these people trapped in the remote north going to survive it?
This is a fun fast-moving novel that lovers of the action-thriller are going to thoroughly enjoy.

This is a thrilling action-packed adventure in the cold North.
Evan Marshall is a paleoecologist in Alaska’s Federal Wilderness Zone. It is a barren place, inhabited by only a few natives. While studying the effects of climate change on the local glaciers, the scientists come across a newly opened cave. Exploring it, they discover a frozen creature in the ice. At first, they think it is a Smilodon, a saber tooth tiger.
When the sponsors of the scientific expedition catch wind of the find, they rush to the site. The scientists begin to suspect that the creature is not a Smilodon at all. It is far too big. The plan is to thaw it and present it live on television.
The creature then disappears out of its high-tech, high security enclosure. The film crew thinks someone stole it. The scientists think it got out on its own.
All heck breaks loose.
This is a finely written and plotted novel. I simply loved it. Evan Marshall is an engaging and likable hero. I also liked the native Inuit who warned them against releasing the creature. There is much action and drama. The tension rarely lets up. If you like stories about the Arctic, thrillers, or just a very good creature feature, this is the book for you.
I really never read anything by Lincoln child that I didn’t like!
Very good book and a nice library addition.
This book was good but it did not seem to have the page turner quality of others I have read from this author. Once I got into it, it did flow and was interesting but for some reason did not necessarily keep me on the edge of my seat. It is worth the read as it has some great parts.
I was completely hooked and was reading as fast as I could until th “cat” was thawed. I was trying to get into the story like it could happen but the creature was just too much.
Another reason to live in the great white north.
Rather on the scary side, but a good read.
Boring! Poor characterizations some full of cliches and somewhat derivative plots. Did not bother to finish this bopk!
1 night 1 book!
Very good book. Good relatable characters. Author does a good job.
Keeps you on edge of your seat. Loved it!
Pretty cool monster. Not his normal book but good
Pretty generic action/adventure but a decent way to fill in my lunch hour. Ho-hum at best.
Easy to read. Entertaining and engaging
