It starts with a love song… not get distracted by past…or the sexy older songwriter I can’t get out of my head.
Gray-
I’ve never met anyone like Justin. He’s fiery, passionate, and smart. A powerful voice for a new generation. But other than an unforgettable one-night stand and a love of music, we have nothing in common. He’s much too young for me. There’s no denying the spark between us. Teaming up with him for a new project should cure this infatuation. After all, writing a love song is the ultimate test for anyone who doesn’t believe in happily ever after. It will either send him running or encourage us both to wipe the slate clean and start over…from zero.
Starting From Zero is a MM, bisexual, age-gap romance…rock and roll style where the key to success begins with a love song. Each book in the Starting From series can be read as a stand-alone.

I don’t normally read age gap romances, they just aren’t my thing, but I adore Lane Hayes so I picked it up and I absolutely loved it!
This book is wonderfully written, the story flows so nicely, there isn’t any filler just a great story that progresses at a steady pace. The characters are well rounded and so different and yet so perfect for each other. Even during the first anonymous hook up you know there is something special between these two totally different people.
Justin is a starving artist work 2 jobs and crashing on his friends couch. Gray is an older extremely successful songwriter. When the opportunity for them to work together comes up they both jump on it, if only to be closer and explore the pull they are both feeling for each other!
I Adored Justin and Gray, but I NEED more Charlie in my life I hope Ms Hayes writes a story for him!
Justin might just be my favorite character Lane Hayes has written. From the moment he came onto the page I adored him. Although I haven’t read all of her books, so I haven’t yet met all of her characters, I feel pretty confident in saying it’s going to take a lot to top him for me. Sorry Geordie. And, actually, Starting from Zero is quite possibly my favorite book of hers, too. Again, sorry Geordie.
I love when an author creates two characters who are so different, but so perfect together. That’s just what Ms. Hayes did with Justin and Gray. Gray is successful, wealthy, and put together, not to mention 18 years older. Justin is struggling, working 2 jobs plus trying to get his band up and running, not knowing what’s next. But from that first anonymous hook-up you could just tell there was going to be something special between them. And boy, was there ever. I could not get enough of these two. They brought out all the emotions and feelings in me. As their story progress we got to see that there was much more to both Justin and Gray than what’s on the surface.
On top of being a really compelling love story, Starting from Zero was a fun read, due largely in part thanks to Charlie. He was a breath of fresh air, bringing a lightness to a story that could have gone down a more melancholy path, as Justin and Gray navigated their feelings, their jobs, their friends, and their backgrounds. This book really had it all- a wonderful love story, endearing main characters, and a terrific crew of side characters (I’m already trying to figure out whose story comes next!).
Let me start by saying, I adore Lane Hayes’ writing, she started this new series off with a truly wonderful story of falling in love, finding your person. Justin and Gray meet and things are just easy between them, talking, laughing, enjoying each other for one night. Anonymously, no strings. But neither can stop thinking about the other.
When fate puts them back together or rather a manipulative friend for his own benefit, true friendship and love grows but not without struggle.
Justin has a lot going on in his life, working 2 jobs, sleeping on his friends couch, trying to get his band gigs, practicing, and dealing with his mom. Gray is a songwriter, spends most of his time at home, alone playing video games and writing, sometimes lonely. They are worlds apart but they fit. What a fantastic story of friendship, family and love. I couldn’t put it down, I didn’t want it to end!!
