I look forward to catching up with favorite characters and this was a great mystery. It was also a very timely topic for a cozy mystery. Billioniare Raphel Nash is settling in to his retirement in Lighthouse Cove, but needs an outlet for all his creative ideas and humanitarian dreams for the world. He plots out a huge conference to invite people to understand and help with Global Survival and hires Shannon to help renovate not just his home, but provide conference space, a tall building for plant life and an old fashioned barn raising. The books covers a lot of time. Months in, the framework is set for the conference, which brings all sorts of new faces (and suspects) to LIghthouse Cove. When Rafe’s former partner is found dead, Shannon is on the scene to try to understand the dynamics of the pair and how to clear her friend’s name. There was a lot of time spent at the conference and I liked the peek into the world of wind turnbines, smart mice, living plants and how patents for new ideas are started.
I love this series! Lots of interesting, colorful and complex characters, some old, some new! Shannon’s multi millionaire friend throws a conference and suddenly attendees start dying. Lots of twists and turns in this very well plotted out story! I love, love, loved it!
Shannon Hammer and her friends and coworkers are so fun. I want to hang out with them. The new renovation and build was so interesting because of all the green innovations they utilized. The mystery kept me up until I finished with a surprise ending.
I love the Fixer-Upper Mysteries! Shannon Hammer and her crew are using their considerable skills to renovate an old Victorian farm house and property for retired tech billionaire, Raphael Nash. He has recently moved to Lightning Cove and has big plans for a global conference on eco-living here on his property. The renovation takes months but all is ready in time for the conference. Rafe welcomes business partners and friends, but no one can get along well with Dillon Charles, and he is found murdered at the barn raising.
Shannon and Mac assist the town’s law enforcement to solve the murder and the resulting chaos in their usual methodical manner. This was a great story and I loved all of the innovations mentioned in the story.
I received a complimentary copy of the book, but all opinions are my own.
This 7th book in this series has two things happening that touches my heart: restoration of old homes and saving and protecting the environment. This series still provides enjoyment and entertainment with some quirky and/or unpleasant characters as well as the regulars ones that I still like such as Shannon and her close friends. This cozy, fast-paced, page-turner still has me a fan of this author. I loved it. As a Kate rater, I was given a complimentary copy for my honest review.
It was well written held my attention
As one of Kate’s Raters, I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It’s all about saving the environment in this seventh installment of Carlisle’s fixer-upper series. Narrated by Shannon Hammer, contractor and protagonist of the series, it introduces new characters and brings back familiar ones. Retired tech billionaire Raphael Nash is hosting a grand conference in Lighthouse Cove and has hired Shannon and her crew to renovate his home and barn for the on-site event. Not only is he the fiancée of Shannon’s friend, Marigold, the namesake of his foundation, he is gorgeous and a genuinely nice guy.
Unlike Shannon and the business-owners of Lighthouse Cove, who stand to benefit from the conference, Rafe’s former business partner, Dillon Charles, is less than thrilled. Vitriolic, condescending, and rude, he rubs everyone the wrong way. Virtual opposites in both looks and personality, his association with Rafe is a puzzle. He vents his feelings of frustration and betrayal on Rafe, trying to convince him to return to their company. But, his criticisms and insults only make things worse.
When Dillon is found dead during one of the opening events of the conference, it is a shock, but not a surprise. Shannon finds herself at a crime scene, a familiar, yet unfortunate occurrence for both her and police chief Eric Jensen(AKA “Thor”). And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, it is followed by another death. Then, a series of events too numerous to be coincidental.
This was another enjoyable book in the series. It had a good mystery, likeable characters, and humor(sometimes laugh-out-loud). And, as always, I learned something new.
A great book! Shannon is helping a billionaire tech man rebuild an old Victorian home and barn for him to live and put on a conference regarding survival and green living. The conference gets off to a rocky start with the finding of the murdered body of Rafe’s partner in his former company. Other things start to happen with a shot at Shannon and her friends , the release of some smart mice, another murder, etc. Shannon, with the help of her boyfriend, Mac, search for who might be the killer. Lots of fun trying to figure out which disgruntled inventor might be the culprit and the characters are highly entertaining. I am really enjoying this series and look forward to what’s next for Shannon and her friends!
Another five star book from Kate Carlisle! Miss Kate always manages to delight in her storytelling.
This is my favorite book of this series so far. I loved the interaction between Mac and Shannon especially the verbal teasing. I could tell from this story how much Mac loves Shannon because he is almost always touching her and giving her platonic kisses on the top of her head and on her forehead. I like him so much more in the books then in the TV movies. Great book.
Kate Carlisle is one of my favourite cosy authors. I love her Bibliophile Mystery series and the Fixer-Upper series comes a close second. I was so excited to get the latest in the series — Shot Through the Hearth.
First, I adore a good pun. Puns are the best. So, *thumbs up* for a punny title.
Second, this was just a brilliant cosy. Fun. It made me laugh. It wasn’t too heavy or drawn out. The mystery flowed well, and I didn’t quite figure out the killer until right at the end.
This might be one of my favourites of the Fixer-Upper series.
I love the continued relationship between Shannon and Mac. Niall is an interesting and attractive kilt-wearing addition to the series. And I loved the insights and side plots around the small town and all of Shannon’s friends.
Definitely recommend to any cosy lovers.

The latest in the “A Fixer-Upper Mystery” series from Berkley comes Kate Carlisle’s Shot Through the Hearth.
Ms. Carlisle is a well known and talented writer. Her cozy mysteries are well written, and original with unforgettable characters. The Fixer-Upper series is a fan favorite and for good reason. The characters are the kind of people many of us would love to have as friends and neighbors, as well as co-workers and family. The returning cast is well developed, with personalities unique to this author’s books.
Cozy mysteries, in general, have plots that aren’t too heavy-handed, and characters that fans want to follow. A home renovator base is for many a fun exploration of a career readers flock too. For many of us who watch endless television shows on renovation or who do home reno’s, it is a pleasure to have a book and series that encapsulates our passion for these types of professions and hobbies.
In this addition to the Fixer-Upper cozy mysteries, Shannon once again finds herself trying to find a killer without becoming a potential victim or suspect as she has in the past. One murder turns into two, and if she doesn’t find out who is behind it all, there could be even more. Luckily, she has help in the form of her friends, and her boyfriend, Mac. Most of the guests at the conference are there to finds ways to help the earth and people survive, but some are there to seek fame and fortune and are not very likable, perhaps even a bit crazy.
Before long, Shannon realizes that one of them may also be desperate enough to have killed multiple times and could have every intention of doing it again. By happenstance, Shannon spies the killer in the nick of time and rushes in to save the day. Using anything she can get her hands on and hoping that Mac and Rafe make it on time, she decides to make a move to stop a killer. In the end, the killer is captured, and everyone is safe.
I am happy to recommend this book Shot Through the Hearth and these cozy mysteries to fans of home renovation, conservation, and lovers of all things mysterious.
