I am at the end of my resources. The Alliance has confiscated everything of value and conscripted or mindwiped most of my crew. I am being taxed again. It is the third time this month. There is no way I can earn enough credits to satisfy the Alliance tax collectors, and they know it. They are watching my ship, making sure that what is left of my crew and I can’t escape. The next time the Alliance … Alliance boards my ship will be the last. I need to find a way to escape them, and cross the border into the Coalition of Free Worlds.
We will become exiles, never able to return home. It doesn’t matter. I have no desire to return to the Alliance. It is up to me to restore my family’s wealth and get revenge against the government for what they are doing to my friends and family.
Nathaniel Roberts is unaware that the Alliance is breaking a century-old treaty in preparation for war. The Alliance isn’t alone, they have formed a pact with the Crimson Tide—a pirate organization. Captain Roberts won’t be facing one enemy, he will be facing at least two. He will have to fight both while trying to make a new home for his crew.

Space-born captain becomes admiral for Buenos Aires star system and marries governor’s daughter – 3.5 stars
When you are born a spacer, you have license to chase after the opposite sex when at port even if you are married and your spouse is with you. In addition, you are more or less expected to drink to excess and your spouse won’t mind too much. Also, both spouses do this behavior and review highlights later with each other.
There is a fair amount of wish-it-were-true thinking that marital infidelity is fine for the goose and the gander not to speak of shooting at the Alliance navy or at the Crimson Tide ships will nearly always succeed.
This fast moving (faster than light in hyperspace at least) action with downtime dalliance that has no specifics but lots of posturing concerning carnal pleasures in this story. Space docks can almost always rebuild a starship quickly. Piracy always pays handsomely. Merchants are always fair, prices are good and people are satisfied with their lot. Relationships are a bit shallow.
Technology has come a long way; science will have to wait. There is more escapism than science and less realism than comic books. Entertaining yes. It seems to be written in a college freshman’s view of how life could be if you had chosen the life of a pirate.
Captain Nathaniel Roberts looses a couple of fights and gets mugged and drugged in an alleyway but is only slightly inconvenienced. In one two minute sequence, Nathaniel is picked up, his broken arm is set, he is loaded into a hovering ship which then flies out of a starship and then…(you will remember this scene!) boom! Dreams are realized here. Amber, her friend Jewel, and Amber’s sister Beverly are gorgeous; each has a fling with Nathaniel before Nathaniel marries one of them. It’s a wonderful world.
The continuing story of captain Roberts and his crew seeking goods to raid and battles to fight , this time he has a new mate at his side and her contacts start the making of a formidable fleet and with new allies he has gained from other territories let the battles begin.
As with the first book the action scenes are well written and the characters private lives trysts make this an extremely enjoyable read.
I have no hesitation in totally recommending this book.
This was one of the best Sci Fi books I have read. Loads of action keeps you reading and not wanting to stop. Second book of series and this one takes off from Space Pirates which features the Father of Nathaniel who is the new Captain.
There is an AI that is almost human. Exiles features the Father and Son together as they take on the evil Alliance Government. I just loved it.
Received as a review copy, this an honest review. For Nathaniel Roberts and his crew, the Alliance has been a great pain to their success; taxing them to the edge of survival. Things aren’t any easier when they become exiles… with a looming war- down right deadly. Highly recommended.
